MU Engineers Developing Military Applications for Smartphones

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Tracking military targets? The University of Missouri’s College of Engineering has an app for that.

Engineers from the MU College of Engineering, with funding from the U.S. Army/Leonard Wood Institute, have enhanced popular smartphones to be able to find and track targets. In addition, the engineers have developed ad hoc networks so that soldiers can relay smartphone information without using the internet. (more…)

Turkey Has Third Most Engaged Online Audience in Europe

LONDON, UK, 18 October 2011 – comScore, Inc., a leader in measuring the digital world, today released an overview of internet usage in Europe and Turkey, showing that of Europe’s 372 million unique visitors, Turkey accounts for 23.1 million unique visitors during August 2011. The United Kingdom showed the highest engagement with users spending an average of nearly 35 hours online in the past month, up 1.5 hours from the previous month. The Netherlands ranked second (32.8 hours per month), closely followed by Turkey, where the average internet user spent 32.7 hours online consuming 3,706 pages per month, the highest consumption amongst all countries reported. New Anticensorship Scheme Could Make it Impossible to Block Individual Sites

ANN ARBOR, Mich.— A radical new approach to thwarting Internet censorship would essentially turn the whole web into a proxy server, making it virtually impossible for a censoring government to block individual sites.

The system is called Telex, and it is the brainchild of computer science researchers at the University of Michigan and the University of Waterloo in Canada. They will present it Aug. 12 at the USENIX Security Symposium in San Francisco. (more…)

People often Talk About Politics on Blogs Geared Toward Other Topics

ANN ARBOR, Mich.— A full 25 percent of blog posts about politics occur on sites that are primarily about something else, according to a new study by researchers at the University of Michigan School of Information. And when authors post about politics, their readers reply and engage with the political content of the posts.

The researchers say they have uncovered a significant repository of political discourse that is largely being ignored. They will present their findings July 19 at the International Conference on Weblogs and Social Media in Barcelona. (more…)
