LONDON, UK, 12 April 2012 – comScore, Inc., a leader in measuring the digital world, today released an overview of internet usage in Europe, showing that 386.6 million Europeans went online in February 2012 for an average of 28.2 hours per person. This release highlights internet usage in 49 European markets aggregated into the European region and provides individual reporting on 18 markets. Amongst its findings, the study also showed that 46 percent of Europeans visit Sports sites, with Turkey and Ireland having the highest penetration at approximately 70 percent in February 2012. University and Netmums Join Forces To Tackle Postnatal Depression

The University of Exeter and parenting website Netmums are developing a new online therapy programme for postnatal depression.

This innovative approach to treatment has been created in response to the stigma that still surrounds postnatal depression, preventing many women from seeking help.

The research is supported by the PenCLAHRC, the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Peninsula Collaboration for Leadership and Applied Health Research and Care.

The research team hopes its programme will pave the way for future online treatments for depression. They are conducting this confidential study of the treatment for free and will assess its effectiveness against regular treatment. (more…)

Researchers Find Cancer News May Contribute to Confusion About Cancer

New research from North Carolina State University shows that most online news stories about cancer contain language that likely contributes to public uncertainty about the disease – a significant finding, given that at least one-third of Americans seek health information online.

“Previous studies show that more than 100 million Americans seek health information online, and that their findings affect their health decisions,” says Dr. Kami Kosenko, an assistant professor of communication at NC State and co-author of a paper describing the study. “But, while people facing uncertainty about cancer issues are likely to seek out additional information, we’ve found that there are features of the information they’re seeking that may actually exacerbate the uncertainty.” (more…)
