There is no shame in ignorance, U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor told a packed crowd in Woolsey Hall during a campus visit to Yale on Feb. 3. In her talk, the alumnus (’79 J.D.) candidly shared situations in her own life when she boldly asked questions if she had no idea what someone was talking about.
Sotomayor told her audience, which included an overflow crowd in Battell Chapel, that the adage commonly stated by teachers — that “there is no stupid question” — is true. (more…)
Der Netz-Optimismus der letzten Dekade scheint sich als Illusion erwiesen zu haben – eine kritische Sichtweise über unsere digitale Identität und die Zukunft unserer Privatsphäre ist daher angebracht. Nach der Rede von Barack Obama zur NSA stellt sich die Frage, wie die nationale und internationale Debatte über die Geheimdienste sowie über digitale Überwachung weiter geht. Und vor allem: welche Politik dieser Debatte folgen wird. Werden wir weiter in einem neutralen Internet surfen? Wie schützen wir unsere digitale Sicherheit? Kann uns dabei jemand anderes helfen, außer uns selbst?

Die Wiederwahl Barack Obamas hing an einem dünnen Faden. Ein Buch beschreibt, wie der US-Präsident seine Selbstzweifel überwand.
Denver, 3. Oktober 2012. Das erste TV-Duell zwischen Barack Obama und dem republikanischen Herausforderer Mitt Romney ist vorbei. Romney eilt von der Bühne in die Garderobe und wird von seinem Team jubelnd empfangen. Seine Frau Ann umarmt ihn, Sohn Tagg ruft begeistert: «Dad, Du hast ihn vernichtet!» Was war geschehen?
Romney hatte neunzig Minuten lang die Bühne dominiert. Er trat eloquent, freundlich und doch hartnäckig auf, bestimmt und doch humorvoll – wie ein Präsident. Obamas Lager dagegen musste konsterniert zusehen, wie ihr Mann völlig neben den Schuhen stand. Er wirkte abwesend und schläfrig, kritzelte Notizen auf Zettel und starrte auf das Pult vor sich hin. Today we noticed that the website of USGS (U.S Geological Survey) whose logo says ‘Science for a changing World’ is unavailable.

Genetic differences are significantly associated with the likelihood that people take on managerial responsibilities, according to new research from UCL (University College London).
The study, published online in Leadership Quarterly, is the first to identify a specific DNA sequence associated with the tendency for individuals to occupy a leadership position. Using a large twin sample, the international research team, which included academics from Harvard, NYU, and the University of California, estimate that a quarter of the observed variation in leadership behaviour between individuals can be explained by genes passed down from their parents. The wide swings in debate performances by this year’s presidential candidates reflect the fact that in modern campaigns, a candidate’s image is the message, according to linguistic anthropologists who have studied presidential campaigns.
Candidates send important messages to voters through even their smallest gestures, the researchers say. For example, in this year’s first debate, President Barack Obama often looked down at the podium and was criticized for appearing disengaged. In subsequent debates Obama directly addressed his Republican opponent, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, and increased the use of a hammering hand gesture sometimes called the “power grip.” (more…)
