Denver, 3. Oktober 2012. Das erste TV-Duell zwischen Barack Obama und dem republikanischen Herausforderer Mitt Romney ist vorbei. Romney eilt von der Bühne in die Garderobe und wird von seinem Team jubelnd empfangen. Seine Frau Ann umarmt ihn, Sohn Tagg ruft begeistert: «Dad, Du hast ihn vernichtet!» Was war geschehen?

Romney hatte neunzig Minuten lang die Bühne dominiert. Er trat eloquent, freundlich und doch hartnäckig auf, bestimmt und doch humorvoll – wie ein Präsident. Obamas Lager dagegen musste konsterniert zusehen, wie ihr Mann völlig neben den Schuhen stand. Er wirkte abwesend und schläfrig, kritzelte Notizen auf Zettel und starrte auf das Pult vor sich hin. A long campaign season with genuine gaffes and alleged misstatements began its culmination with the first presidential debate. Like many citizens, linguist Geoff Pullum, a visiting professor at Brown, was watching.

Grammarian Geoff Pullum is the Gerard Visiting Professor of Cognitive, Linguistic and Psychological Sciences at Brown University and professor of general linguistics at the University of Edinburgh. He is also a frequent blogger on language and politics on Language Log and Lingua Franca.

In a conversation with David Orenstein, he cited several specious analyses of word choice and syntax that have been used unfairly against candidates. The often ill-informed critiques stand in stark contrast to the way people are typically inclined to overcome the misstatements of others as they extract understanding from clumsy speech. Pullum will be listening closely to the presidential and vice presidential debates. (more…)

Woolsey Hall was packed with his fans on Nov. 8 when Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman took the stage for an “Actor’s Studio”-styled interview with Ron Gregg, a senior lecturer and programming director in Yale’s Film Studies Program.

Among those who came out to see the 74-year-old-actor — visiting the campus as a Chubb Fellow —was a 95-year old woman who listened as Freeman described his acting career and his history on television, in theater and in film. When given the opportunity to ask a question, she simply gushed, “Morgan Freeman, I love you. I’ve seen every movie you’ve been in.” She then told him, “I don’t want to show you any disrespect” for being so bold. (more…)
