[Brown University] — Climate change is an issue of urgent international importance, but for 20 years, the international community has been unable to agree on a coordinated way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Die Region Terra Sirenum im südlichen Marshochland wartet mit sehr unterschiedlichen Geländeformen auf. Ein Beispiel für die vielfältigen geologischen Prozesse, die dort auf kleinem Raum abgelaufen sind, ist das etwa 200 Kilometer große Atlantis-Becken mit einer wirren, zerfurchten Landschaft namens Atlantis Chaos. In einem Bildmosaik aus vier Aufnahmen der vom Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) betriebenen, hochauflösenden Stereokamera HRSC auf der ESA-Raumsonde Mars Express können die Spuren dieser Prozesse beobachtet werden. Speeding at 1 Million mph, It Probes Black Hole and Dark Matter
A University of Utah-led team discovered a “hypervelocity star” that is the closest, second-brightest and among the largest of 20 found so far. Speeding at more than 1 million mph, the star may provide clues about the supermassive black hole at the center of our Milky Way and the halo of mysterious “dark matter” surrounding the galaxy, astronomers say. Birds come in astounding variety—from hummingbirds to emus—and behave in myriad ways: they soar the skies, swim the waters and forage the forests. But this wasn’t always the case, according to research by scientists at the University of Chicago and the Field Museum.
The researchers found a striking lack of diversity in the earliest known fossil bird fauna—a set of species that lived at about the same time and in the same habitat. “There were no swans, no swallows, no herons, nothing like that. They were pretty much all between a sparrow and a crow,” said Jonathan Mitchell, a PhD student in the Committee on Evolutionary Biology and lead author of the new study, published May 28 in Proceedings of the Royal Society B. A biomedical engineer listens in on what proteins are saying.
As inventions go, Yale biomedical engineer Rong Fan’s entry into the innovation sweepstakes is not much to look at. Fan’s device, impressively named a single-cell, 45-plex protein secretion measurement platform, seems to be little more than a sandwich of two sheets of clear silicon rubber the thickness of window glass, each sheet a bit smaller than a credit card and bearing a smaller, darker rectangle divided into 14 vertical sections. It has no flashing lights, no intriguing noises, no moving parts, no signs of Applesque high design. Indeed, the object, displayed in Fan’s bustling laboratory on the first floor of the Daniel L. Malone Engineering Center, doesn’t appear to be doing anything at all. (more…)
Hongkong startet Rekord-Zerstörung von illegalem Elfenbein
Der WWF begrüßt die Pläne der Regierung Hongkongs, insgesamt 28 Tonnen von konfisziertem Elfenbein zu vernichten. Der Auftakt wurde heute mit der Verbrennung eines Teilbestands von Stoßzähnen und Schnitzereien gemacht. Insgesamt handelt es sich um die größte Menge an konfisziertem Elfenbein, die weltweit zerstört wird. Hongkong gilt als Drehkreuz für den internationalen Elfenbeinschmuggel und bedient mit lokalen Märkten zugleich die enorme illegale Nachfrage vom chinesischen Festland. Die frühere britische Kolonie liegt auf Rang fünf der Staaten mit den höchsten Elfenbeinaufgriffen seit 1989. (more…)
