Weltgemeinschaft vereint im Kampf gegen Wilderei

Der Versuch Elefanten, Nashörner, Tiger und andere bedrohte Wildtierarten besser vor Wilderei zu schützen, hat heute hochrangige Unterstützung erfahren. Auf der Londoner Konferenz zu illegalem Artenhandel und Wilderei, an der 40 Staaten sowie das britische Königshaus mit Prinz Charles und Prinz William teilnahmen, wurde ein Meilenstein für den internationalen Schutz bedrohter Arten gelegt. „Der heutige Tag ist ein Durchbruch im Kampf gegen den illegalen Wildtierhandel. Die Weltgemeinschaft will entschieden gegen Wilderei und illegalen Artenhandel vorgehen. Selten haben wir eine solche Entschlossenheit und Einigkeit gesehen. Damit drehen wir den Spieß um – von nun an wird es sehr ungemütlich für die Wildtiermafia da draußen“, sagt Volker Homes, Leiter Artenschutz des WWF Deutschland. (more…)

Hunderte Vögel im südafrikanischen Winterquartier erbeutet

In Afrikas Seen und großen Flüssen ist der Tigerfish oder Tigersalmler weit verbreitet. Hinsichtlich der Ernährung sind die bis zu einen Meter großen Fische wenig wählerisch. Verspeist wird alles, was vor die scharfen Zähne kommt, in der Regel Fische und Krustentiere. Erstmals wurde nun nachgewiesen und im Film festgehalten, dass zur Beute des Tigersalmlers auch über das Wasser fliegende Rauchschwalben gehören. (more…)

Microsoft introduces the 4Afrika Scholarship program

Part of the 4Afrika Initiative, the program will offer mentorship, training, university-level education and employment opportunities to aspiring African youth.

LAGOS, Nigeria — Aug. 12, 2013 — In recognition of International Youth Day, Microsoft Corp. Monday introduced the 4Afrika Scholarship program, as part of its 4Afrika Initiative, through which it will provide mentorship, leadership and technical training, certification, university-level education, and employment opportunities for promising African students. Mentorship will be provided by Microsoft employees from around the world, and employment opportunities will include internships and both part-time and full-time jobs within Microsoft, as well as with the company’s more than 10,000 partners across Africa.

Through the company’s 4Afrika Initiative and YouthSpark program, Microsoft has committed to helping millions of Africans get critical skills for entrepreneurship and employability. The 4Afrika Scholarship program is one way the company intends to meet that goal, by helping ensure that promising youth have access to the education, resources and skills they need to succeed, regardless of their financial situations. Global study stresses importance of public Internet access

Millions of people in low-income countries still depend on public computer and Internet access venues despite the global proliferation of mobile phones and home computers. However, interest in providing such public access has waned in recent years, especially among development agencies, as new technologies become available.

But a five-year, eight-country study recently concluded by the Technology & Social Change Group at the University of Washington Information School has found that community access to computer and Internet technology remains a crucial resource for connecting people to the information and skills they need in an increasingly digital world.
