Auf der ILA 2014 Berlin Air Show zeigt das Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) mit mehr als 60 Exponaten am DLR-Stand (Halle 4), im Space Pavilion, im CareerCenter und am Stand des BMWi seine Forschungsergebnisse für die Luft- und Raumfahrt. For Earth Day this year, NASA invited people around the world to step outside to take a “selfie” and share it with the world on social media. NASA released Thursday a new view of our home planet created entirely from those photos.
The “Global Selfie” mosaic was built using more than 36,000 individual photographs drawn from the more than 50,000 images tagged #GlobalSelfie and posted on or around Earth Day, April 22, on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Google+ and Flickr. The project was designed to encourage environmental awareness and recognize the agency’s ongoing work to protect our home planet. (more…)
Michigan State University researchers have identified a genetic mutation in Doberman pinschers that causes albinism in the breed, a discovery that has eluded veterinarians and breeders worldwide up until now.
Paige Winkler, a doctoral student in the College of Veterinary Medicine, co-led the study with Joshua Bartoe, an assistant professor in the Department of Small Animal Clinical Sciences, and discovered a mutated gene that is associated with a form of albinism in humans. (more…)
Findings could lead to natural bacterial anti-infectives in food-producing plants
COLUMBIA, Mo. – When bacteria attack plants, they often inject harmful proteins into the host plants’ cells to weaken and suppress natural defenses. However, in some plants, bacteria attack once they’ve recognized the plant cells as a potential host. Now, researchers at the University of Missouri have identified and replicated the process that allows the bacteria—known mostly for attacking tomatoes—to invade its host. This discovery could lead to natural anti-infective treatments that work with food-producing plants to enhance resistance to harmful bacteria in the field. (more…)

Das ehrgeizige Projekt nahm am 21. Juni 2010 seinen Anfang – damals startete der Radarsatellit TanDEM-X ins All, um zu seinem Zwillingssatelliten TerraSAR-X aufzuschließen. Seitdem kreisen die beiden deutschen Satelliten in einem ausgeklügelten Formationsflug um die Erde und vermessen deren Oberfläche. (more…)
Biotreibstoffe bieten eine Perspektive den CO2-Abdruck der Luftfahrt zu senken sowie mögliche ungünstige Klimaeinflüsse von Partikelemissionen und Kondensstreifen zu reduzieren. Diesem weltweit aktuellen Forschungsthema widmen sich die US-amerikanische Luft- und Raumfahrtbehörde NASA und das Deutsche Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) sowie das kanadische National Research Council (NRC) bei gemeinsamen Flugversuchen vom 7. bis 16. Mai 2014 in Kalifornien. In typischen Reiseflughöhen werden die Emissionen eines Biotreibstoff-Kerosin-Gemisches sowie dessen Auswirkungen auf die Bildung und Eigenschaften von Kondensstreifen vermessen. Die von der NASA geleitete Flugkampagne umfasst mehr als einhundert beteiligte Wissenschaftler und Techniker. Vier Forschungsflugzeuge sind im Einsatz, darunter die Falcon 20-E des DLR. Ausgangsort ist das Armstrong Flight Research Center der NASA am Standort Palmdale/Kalifornien. (more…)
A UA engineering student is part of a team trying to awaken an abandoned NASA space probe and put it back to work in outer space.
More than 25 years ago, an abandoned NASA spacecraft fulfilled its mission, fell silent and has since been hurtling around the sun, somewhere between the orbits of Earth and Mars. Now, a University of Arizona engineering student is trying to wake it up. (more…)
