Frankreich zerstört heute drei Tonnen beschlagnahmtes Elfenbein, um sein Engagement gegen den illegalen Elfenbeinhandel zu unterstreichen. Die öffentlichkeitswirksame Aktion vor dem Eiffelturm in Paris ist Teil eines nationalen Plans gegen Wilderei und illegalen Wildtierhandel, den das Land vor zwei Monaten im Rahmen eines Afrika-Gipfels für Frieden und Sicherheit angekündigt hatte. Der WWF lobt die Maßnahme als richtigen Schritt und forderte weitere Anstrengungen, um bedrohte Wildtiere vor der Ausrottung zu retten. „Mit der öffentlichen Elfenbeinzerstörung vor dem Eiffelturm setzt Frankreich ein klares Zeichen gegen Wilderei und illegalen Artenhandel“, sagt Johannes Kirchgatter, Afrika-Referent beim WWF Deutschland. Andreas Maurer, neuberufener Professor für Europäische Integration am Institut für Politikwissenschaft, plädiert für eine intensivere Auseinandersetzung mit der EU und ihren Funktionsweisen. Einen Beitrag zu einem besseren Verständnis des komplexen Systems der Europäischen Union zu leisten, ist dem Europaforscher ein wichtiges Anliegen.

„Wir haben in der Europaforschung zwei Bibeln: der Vertrag auf der einen und die Geschäftsbedingungen auf der anderen Seite“, beschreibt Dr. Andreas Maurer seine wichtigsten „Untersuchungsgegenstände“. Zentrales Forschungsinteresse des Wissenschaftlers ist die Analyse der europäischen Vertragsgrundlagen und deren dynamischer Entwicklung. Maurer beschäftigt sich vordergründig mit der Frage, in welcher Form die Handlungsangebote der EU vonseiten der Politik, der Wirtschaft, von NGOs aber auch von den Bürgern selbst genutzt werden. „Durch laufende Adaptierungen der Rechtslage versucht die EU Anreize dafür zu schaffen, dass sich die Bevölkerung in einem stärkeren Ausmaß unmittelbar an Entscheidungsprozessen beteiligt“, verdeutlicht Maurer. „Mich beschäftigt, wie und warum dieses Angebot angenommen wird – oder auch nicht.“ (more…)

HONOLULU – A species of lizard is now extinct from the Hawaiian Islands, making it the latest native vertebrate species to become extirpated from this tropical archipelago.

The copper striped blue-tailed skink (Emoia impar) — a sleek lizard with smooth, polished scales and a long, sky-blue tail — was last confirmed in the Na’Pali coast of Kauai in the 1960s. But repeated field surveys on Kauai, Oahu, Maui and Hawai’i islands from 1988 to 2008 have yielded no sightings or specimens. (more…)

The sun and the solar system’s rocky inner planets, including the Earth, may have formed differently than previously thought, according to UCLA scientists and colleagues analyzing samples returned by NASA’s Genesis mission.

The data from Genesis, which collected material from the solar wind blowing from the sun, reveal differences between the sun and planets with regard to oxygen and nitrogen, two of the most abundant elements in our solar system, the researchers report in two studies in the June 24 issue of the journal Science. And although the differences are slight, the research could help determine how our solar system evolved. (more…)
