„Changing the world is hard“: Auf dem Weg zu einem neuen Internet?

Allerorten wird das Allheilmittel der Transparenz gegen digitale Kontrolle und Machtmissbrauch angeführt. Einzelne Whistleblower aus dem Umfeld von Julian Assange und Wikileaks, aber auch Edward Snowden gelten als Magier dieser Zauberformel. Inwiefern bereichern Leakings unsere politische Öffentlichkeit sowie eine neue demokratische Informationsstruktur? Und wie können die Vermittlungsprobleme hin zur traditionellen Politik und zum politischen System gelöst werden? Diese und andere Fragen wurden auf der internationelen Konferenz „Einbruch der Dunkelheit“ in Berlin diskutiert.

In der Folge der Enthüllungen Edward Snowdens wird das Verhältnis von Gesellschaft und Technik schon seit einiger Zeit intensiv diskutiert. Die Möglichkeiten digitaler Selbstermächtigung (z.B. durch Verschlüsselung) einerseits und kollektiver politischer Gegenentwürfe andererseits spielen in diesem Zusammenhang eine wichtige Rolle. Nairobi, Kenya – 27 Jan 2014: IBM IBM today announced the results of a new study entitled ‘Setting the pace in Africa: How IT leaders deliver on the potential of emerging technologies’, which found that while nearly 87 percent of African IT leaders rank new technologies such as analytics, cloud, mobile and social media as being critical to business success, only 53% are pushing forward with adoption. Online Design: Novel Collaborative Software Helps Systems Engineers Link Performance and Cost

Today’s modeling and simulation (M&S) software provides indispensible tools for systems engineering challenges. Such programs allow investigators to experiment with “what-ifs” by adjusting design parameters and examining potential outcomes.

A team from the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) has produced an advanced web-based tool that lets physically separated participants collaborate on model-based systems engineering projects. Known as the Framework for Assessing Cost and Technology (FACT), the program utilizes open-source software components to allow users to visualize a system’s potential expense alongside its performance, reliability and other factors. DAVOS, Switzerland — Jan. 24, 2014 — A new global survey of Internet users conducted by Microsoft Corp. reveals distinct regional findings and differing viewpoints between the developed and developing world. However, overwhelmingly the more than 10,000 people surveyed from 10 nations said they embrace personal technology, particularly in emerging markets, and see it as the foundation of innovation and economic empowerment.
