Made in IBM Labs: Scientists Set New Speed Record for Big Data

Ultra-high definition 4K movie or 40,000 songs from the Cloud could be downloaded in a few seconds

SAN FRANCISCO – 13 Feb 2014: IBM today announced that it has achieved a new technological advancement that will helpimprove Internet speeds to 200 – 400 Gigabits per second (Gb/s) at extremely low power.

The speed boost is based on a device that can be used to improve transferring Big Data between clouds and data centers four times faster than current technology. At this speed 160 Gigabytes, the equivalent of a two-hour, 4K ultra-high definition movie or 40,000 songs, could be downloaded in only a few seconds. The device was presented at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco.  (more…)

Made in IBM Labs: Scientists Turn Data into Disease Detective to Predict Dengue Fever and Malaria Outbreaks

IBM teams up with Johns Hopkins University and UC San Francisco to help public health officials model, predict and track the possible spread of infectious diseases

SAN JOSE, Calif., – 30 Sep 2013: Scientists from IBM are collaborating with Johns Hopkins University and University of California, San Francisco to combat illness and infectious diseases in real-time with smarter data tools for public health. The focus is to help contain global outbreaks of dengue fever and malaria by applying the latest analytic models, computing technology and mathematical skills on an open-source framework.

Vector-borne diseases, like malaria and dengue fever, are infections transmitted to humans and other animals by blood-feeding insects, such as mosquitoes, ticks and fleas. (more…)

Made in IBM Labs: IBM Scientists Unveil Highly Integrated Millimeter-Wave Transceiver for Mobile Communications and Radar Imaging applications

Researchers invent solution that seamlessly brings together 4 integrated chips and 64 antennas in a single package for mobile and transportation solutions
Proven SiGe BiCMOS prototype takes advantage of under-utilized short-wavelength frequency

SEATTLE, WA – 04 Jun 2013: Scientists from IBM have achieved a milestone in creating a phased-array transceiver that contains all of the millimeter-wave components necessary for both high data-rate communications and advanced-resolution radar imaging applications.  The newly demonstrated integrated circuits (ICs) tackle data bottleneck issues for mobile communications applications and allow radar-imaging technology to be scaled down to the size of a computer laptop.

Advanced radio frequency integration has been a key driver in the explosive growth of mobile device capability and sophistication.  Millimeter-wave bandwidth has the ability to support Gb/s wireless communications, dramatically expanding opportunities for mobile backhaul, small cell infrastructure, and data center overlay network deployment.
