Die Crystalline Mirror Solutions GmbH (CMS) ist aus der experimentellen Grundlagenforschung von Markus Aspelmeyer und Garrett Cole an der Fakultät für Physik der Universität Wien hervorgegangen. Heute ist CMS ein weltweit führender Hersteller von Hochpräzisionsoptik für Lasersysteme und wurde bereits mehrfach ausgezeichnet, zuletzt mit dem 1. Platz in der Kategorie High-Tech beim GEWINN-Jungunternehmerwettbewerb. Ein Beweis dafür, dass Grundlagenforschung eine wichtige Basis für wirtschaftliche Innovationen ist.

Crystalline Mirror Solutions ist ein Pionierunternehmen auf dem Gebiet der laserbasierten Präzisionsmessung. “Unsere Technologie erlaubt erstmals den Einsatz kristalliner Halbleiterspiegel für die konventionelle Laseroptik. Die Spiegel – man spricht von einem sogenannten Bragg-Mirror – bestehen aus einem sehr dünnen, kristallinen Film mit einer genau definierten Abfolge von Halbleiterschichten. Dieser Halbleiterfilm wird direkt mit einem optischen Träger verbunden”, so Markus Aspelmeyer, Professor für Quantum Information on the Nanoscale an der Universität Wien. (more…)

It’s the first day of school in a brand new city for Ava Margaret Avignoli, and something strange is going on.

The third-grader notices muddy footprints that lead to a secret door in the back of Corridor C. Ava decides to figure out what’s going on, and her pursuit involves asking some pointed questions, conducting science experiments, and putting together a bunch of clues. Bei der automatisierten Produktion in der Industrie fällt eine enorme Menge an Daten an – eine zielgerichtete Analyse dieser Daten kann dabei helfen, Risiken im Betriebsablauf zu minimieren. Dafür hat jetzt ein Konsortium aus Wissenschaft und Industrie das Forschungsprojekt „FEE: Frühzeitige Erkennung und Entscheidungsunterstützung in kritischen Situationen im Produktionsumfeld“ gestartet. There is still quite a bit of interest in cloud services, and still no small demand for them. Due to this, there’s been a rush by all manner of service providers, both old and new, to provide cloud offerings to hungry customers. Indeed, of the roughly 20,000 North American service providers, just about 20 percent of these offer cloud services at this time, and this number is expected to grow sharply over the next few years. Yet at the same time, there will be a lot of attrition among these providers, if only because many of these organizations are only regional in nature, and offer only a small array of products — most of them just one or two.

At least that’s what Ashar Baig, a research director at Gigaom predicts. He provided his view on the near future and the recent past of cloud services at the recent ITEXPO in Las Vegas, Nevada. (more…)

Children’s social skills may be declining as they have less time for face-to-face interaction due to their increased use of digital media, according to a UCLA psychology study.

UCLA scientists found that sixth-graders who went five days without even glancing at a smartphone, television or other digital screen did substantially better at reading human emotions than sixth-graders from the same school who continued to spend hours each day looking at their electronic devices. Integration von digitalem Fachwissen und Automatisierung von Risiko-Analysen kann Testverfahren für Software deutlich verbessern und Cloud Computing sicherer machen. Das zeigen neueste Ergebnisse eines vom FWF geförderten Projekts zur Qualitätssicherung sicherheitskritischer Systeme der Uni Innsbruck, die vor kurzem veröffentlicht wurden.

Software-EntwicklerInnen erleben oftmals böse Überraschungen: Selbst nach langer und erfolgreicher Anwendung von Cloud-Programmen tun sich plötzlich unerwartete Schwachstellen auf. Tatsächlich sind gerade Cloud-Programme anfällig dafür. Nicht weil sie schlecht geschrieben wurden, sondern weil sie viele laufend aktualisierte Schnittstellen besitzen. Diese machen Funktionalitäten erforderlich, die weit über den eigentlichen Programmablauf hinausgehen und von dritten Systemen abhängen. Sogenannte nicht-funktionale Sicherheitstests können diese Aspekte zwar testen, doch die konventionellen Methoden der Qualitätssicherung scheitern oft an der Komplexität der Anforderungen. Jetzt haben WissenschafterInnen der Universität Innsbruck Grundlagen vorgestellt, die nicht-funktionale Tests deutlich verbessern können. (more…)
