EU-Bürgerinitiative „EndEcocide“ sammelt Unterschriften für Mutter Erde

Die Erde ist unsere Heimat. Sie fällt dem Wunsch nach Wohlstand zum Opfer, sie leidet unter dem rücksichtslosen Wirtschaftssystem. Firmen wie Gazprom und Shell haben offiziell das Recht, ganze Ökosysteme zu gefährden. Unser Planet kann sich erneuern – aber seine Kapazitäten sind erschöpft. Jetzt kann sich jeder ganz einfach dafür einsetzen, dass Umweltsünder offiziell bestraft werden.

Vor einem Jahr entschied die britische Anwältin Polly Higgins, sich eine Auszeit zu nehmen. Sie fand, es sei nun die Natur, die eine Vertreterin ihrer Rechte benötige. Higgins gelangte zur Überzeugung, dass dem naturzerstörenden Wirtschaftssystem mit einer bestimmten Maßnahme begegnet werden kann: Ökozid muss als Verbrechen gelten. (more…)

Study Offers Economical Solutions for Maintaining Critical Delta Environments

Millions of people across the world live or depend on deltas for their livelihoods.

Formed at the lowest part of a river where its water flow slows and spreads into the sea, deltas are sediment-rich, biodiverse areas, a valuable source of seafood, fertile ground for agriculture, and host to ports important for transportation.

At least half of the deltas around the world are so-called “wave dominated deltas” – open to the sea and under the impact of wave erosion. And many more deltas will come under wave dominance as dammed rivers carry less and less sediment. In a warming climate, sea levels are rising and storms are increasing in frequency and severity, posing threats to these deltas and the people and habitats dependent on them. (more…)

World’s mangroves, salt marshes hold potential for reducing carbon emissions

Mangroves, the dense forests found along tropical and subtropical coastlines, have some specialized trees that can take in air through their roots at low tide and excrete salt right out of their leaves. The unusual ecosystems can also absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide, making them a natural solution for controlling greenhouse gases.

Disrupt them, however, and they’ll put that carbon right back into the atmosphere. (more…)

Das europäische „Jahr der Luft“ verpufft ohne entscheidende Verbesserungen für die Luftqualität und auf Kosten der Gesundheit der Bürger

Berlin- Im Europäischen Jahr der Luft 2013 starben in Europa etwa 420.000 Menschen vorzeitig an den Folgen von Luftverschmutzung. Allein in Deutschland sind circa 70.000 entsprechende Todesfälle zu beklagen. Angesichts dieser erschreckenden Zahlen fordern die Umwelt- und Verkehrsverbände die neue Bundesregierung auf, einen wirksamen Fahrplan zur Luftreinhaltung vorzulegen.

„Die scheidende Bundesregierung hat die Bemühungen zur Verbesserung der Luftqualität in Deutschland in den vergangenen vier Jahren konsequent sabotiert und sich wieder einmal als Handlanger der Industrie präsentiert. Das neue Kabinett muss jetzt beweisen, dass sie das Wohl der Bürger nicht über die Interessen einer Lobbygruppe stellt“, sagt Dorothee Saar von der Deutschen Umwelthilfe (DUH). (more…)

Berlin: Der Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Deutschland (BUND) hat Wirtschafts- und Energieminister Sigmar Gabriel und Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel aufgefordert, das Erneuerbare-Energien-Gesetz (EEG) und die Energiewende gegen aktuelle Angriffe der EU-Kommission zu verteidigen.

“Setzt sich die EU-Kommission durch, ist nicht nur in Deutschland die Energiewende bedroht. Denn zusätzlich zum Beihilfeverfahren will die EU-Kommission neue restriktive Vorgaben zur Förderung der erneuerbaren Energien erlassen. Das würde den Ausbau der regenerativen Energien europaweit abbremsen”, sagte der BUND-Vorsitzende Hubert Weiger. (more…)

NASA Developing Natural Hazard Warning Systems

Scientists at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif., and Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego have enhanced existing GPS technologies to develop new systems for California and elsewhere to warn of hazards from earthquakes, tsunamis and extreme weather events.

The technology was demonstrated in July by forecasters at NOAA National Weather Service offices in Oxnard, Calif., and San Diego. They used it to track a summer monsoon rain event affecting Southern California and issue more accurate and timely flash flood warnings. The system uses real-time information from GPS stations upgraded with small, inexpensive seismic and meteorological sensors. (more…)

AUSTIN, Texas — As coastal communities continue to rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, scientists at last week’s annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union offer some encouraging news: The storm did not seriously damage the offshore barrier system that controls erosion on Long Island. Long-term concerns remain about the effects on the region of sea-level rise, pollutants churned up by the storm within back-barrier estuaries, and the damage closer to shore, but in the near-term, Long Island residents can rebuild knowing that Hurricane Sandy did not significantly alter the offshore barrier systems that control coastal erosion on the island.
