(more…)

Memory loss associated with Alzheimer’s reversed for first time

Small trial by UCLA and Buck Institute succeeds using ‘systems approach’ to memory disorders

Patient 1 had two years of progressive memory loss. She was considering quitting her job, which involved analyzing data and writing reports, she got disoriented driving, and she mixed up the names of her pets.

Patient 2 kept forgetting once-familiar faces at work, forgot his gym locker combination and had to have his assistants constantly remind him of his work schedule. (more…)

Why ‘I’m so happy I could cry’ makes sense

The phrase “tears of joy” never made much sense to Yale psychologist Oriana Aragon. But after conducting a series of studies of such seemingly incongruous expressions, she now understands better why people cry when they are happy.

“People may be restoring emotional equilibrium with these expressions,” said Aragon, lead author of work to be published in the journal Psychological Science. “They seem to take place when people are overwhelmed with strong positive emotions, and people who do this seem to recover better from those strong emotions.” (more…)

Skin Care Tips to Look Attractive In Winter

A person’s psyche and skin may rebel against seasonal changes, the skin thus needs to be nurtured to give it the healthy characteristics to boost one’s psyche. A change in the skin care routine is thus necessary during winter to prevent drying up and flaking of the skin. To look attractive in the winter the following skin care tips should be practiced:

 Use of good moisturizers

Heavier, richer moisturizers help prevent environmental conditions and prevent moisture loss in over-heated rooms. Products with alpha hydroxyl acids should be substituted with products enriched with natural cocoa butter and vitamin E which provides deep and long-lasting moisture and smoothies away dullness.

(more…)

Teens Still Sending Naked Selfies

A new study from the University of Utah confirms that substantial numbers of teens are sexting – sending and receiving explicit sexual images via cellphone. Though the behavior is widely studied, the potentially serious consequences of the practice led the researchers to more accurately measure how frequently teens are choosing to put themselves at risk in this fashion. Drug tests on mothers’ hair links recreational drug use to birth defects

Drug tests on 517 mothers in English inner city hospitals found that nearly 15% had taken recreational drugs during pregnancy and that mothers of babies with birth defects of the brain were significantly more likely to have taken drugs than mothers with normal babies. The study found no significant links between recreational drug use and any other type of birth defect.

The study was led by a team of UCL researchers co-ordinating data collection from hospitals across London, Bristol and Birmingham and the results are published in the journal PLOS ONE. The study included 213 women whose baby had a type of birth defect with potential links to recreational drug use, 143 women whose baby had a birth defect with no previously reported links to drug use and 161 women whose baby was normally formed.
