IBM Pledges $50 Million To Create 100 Smarter Cities

ARMONK, N.Y. – 09 Nov 2010: IBM today inaugurated Smarter Cities Challenge, a competitive grant program in which IBM will award $50 million worth of technology and services to help 100 municipalities across the globe. Teams of IBM experts will provide city leaders with recommendations for successful growth, better delivery of municipal services, more citizen engagement, and improved efficiency.

This new program is the single-largest philanthropic investment currently planned by IBM, which made US$186 million worth of charitable contributions in 2009, comprising cash, technology, and consulting services. (more…)

IBM Analytics Helps Medical Researchers Detect Complication In Stroke Patients

LAS VEGAS, – 26 Oct 2010:

IBM today announced a new project in which researchers at Columbia University Medical Center will utilize IBM’s streaming analytics technology to potentially detect severe complications in brain injured patients up to 48 hours earlier than traditional methods.

For patients that have suffered a bleeding stroke from a ruptured brain aneurysm, recovery can involve serious complications. One of the most severe and frequent complications is delayed ischemia, a life threatening condition in which the brain does not get enough blood to function properly. Currently, detectable symptoms only appear once blood flood has been significantly reduced, forcing medical professionals to be reactive instead of preventative in their treatment. In 20 percent of patients with this complication, there are no observable symptoms at all and it is only after it is too late that their doctor realizes that the patient needed treatment. (more…)

Diluted earnings per share of $2.82, up 18 percent;
31 consecutive quarters of EPS growth, 13 of last 15 at double digits;
Full-year 2010 EPS expectations raised to at least $11.40;
Net income of $3.6 billion, up 12 percent;
Net margin of 14.8 percent, up 1.1 points;
Revenue of $24.3 billion, up 3 percent as reported, 4 percent adjusting for currency;
Growth markets revenue up 16 percent, 13 percent adjusting for currency;
BRIC countries revenue up 29 percent, 26 percent adjusting for currency;
Business analytics revenue up 14 percent;
Systems and Technology revenue up 10 percent, 11 percent adjusting for currency;
System z mainframe revenue up 15 percent; MIPS up 54 percent;

ARMONK, N.Y. – 14 Oct 2010: IBM (NYSE: IBM) today announced that it has acquired PSS Systems, a privately held company based in Mountain View, Calif. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

PSS Systems’ software helps organizations analyze, automate and implement information governance policies across massive amounts of electronic business information and dispose of that information in an automated way.
