Made in IBM Labs: Breakthrough Chip Technology Lights the Path to Exascale Computing

*IBM Silicon Nanophotonics uses optical signals to connect chips together faster and with lower power*

Yorktown Heights, N.Y. – 01 Dec 2010: IBM scientists today unveiled a new chip technology that integrates electrical and optical devices on the same piece of silicon, enabling computer chips to communicate using pulses of light (instead of electrical signals), resulting in smaller, faster and more power-efficient chips than is possible with conventional technologies. 

The new technology, called CMOS Integrated Silicon Nanophotonics,  is the result of a decade of development at IBM’s global Research laboratories. The patented technology will change and improve the way computer chips communicate – by integrating optical devices and functions directly onto a silicon chip, enabling over 10X improvement in integration density than is feasible with current manufacturing techniques.  (more…)

NC State and IBM Researchers Discover New Way to Patch Holes in The ‘Cloud’

Researchers from North Carolina State University and IBM have invented a way to update computer systems packaged in virtual machines in a computer “cloud” – even when those programs are offline.

The new cloud computing patch tool developed by NC State and IBM is called Nuwa and protects virtual machines (VMs) from cyber-attacks by ensuring that they always receive important security upgrades. In addition, the researchers have determined that offline application of security patches is more than four times faster than online patch application. The tool is named after a Chinese goddess who patched a hole in the sky. (more…)

Samlink Turns to IBM for New Services Agreement

*IBM to manage the IT infrastructure of over 400 bank branch offices and deploy a cloud learning environment*

HELSINKI, Finland, – 24 Nov 2010: IBM announced today it has signed a new agreement with Samlink to manage the information technology (IT) infrastructure for the company’s more than 400 bank branch offices across Finland. The five-year, EURO 28 million agreement signed this month follows the IT agreement between the two companies inked one year ago in November 2009 in which IBM enabled Samlink to achieve greater efficiency in its data center operations.

IBM will manage overall IT operations and internal workstations for Samlink and its clients including self-service kiosks, wireless networks, workstation and maintenance, desktop, servers, and printers. (more…)

IBM Powers Russian Pharmaceutical Company PROTEK

*IBM’s POWER7 systems replace HP servers*

MOSCOW, – 22 Nov 2010: IBM today announced that Russian pharmaceutical distributor PROTEK has switched to IBM POWER7 systems for its data processing center. The new systems from IBM replace the previous servers from HP, enabling PROTEK to improve the performance of critical business applications while reducing power consumption and increasing return on investment.

PROTEK is one of Russia’s largest pharmaceutical companies, distributing medicines to 44,000 pharmacies and health-care institutions across the Russian Federation. PROTEK’s rapid business growth and the implementation of a new ERP system across all of its offices resulted in a sharp increase in workload for the company’s IT infrastructure. PROTEK’s legacy IT system, based on HP SuperDome servers, failed to meet its growing performance requirements. In an effort to avoid further delays in critical business data processing, PROTEK’s management board decided to switch to a new server platform. (more…)

IBM Sets Benchmark Record for x86-64 Transaction Processing, Bests HP by 27%

ARMONK, N.Y. – 18 Nov 2010: IBM said today it scored the highest TPC-C benchmark performance result ever achieved by an x86-64 processor-based server. The IBM System x3850 X5 server handled 2,308,099 tpmC (transactions per minute C) at price/performance of  $.64 USD / tpmC. (1)

Running on the latest Intel® Xeon® 7500 Series processor, and equipped with IBM’s MAX5 technology, the System x3850 X5 showed a 27% performance boost over HP’s result of 1,807,347 tpmC.(2) 

The new result demonstrates the leadership performance that is possible with MAX5, an industry-first technology that decouples memory from the processor allowing memory to be expanded independently of the processor to increase the productivity of a single system. By increasing the memory capacity of the x3850 X5 by 50%, MAX5 allows the system to process more transactions per minute.  (more…)

ARMONK, N.Y. – 15 Nov 2010: McKesson Corporation and IBM are teaming on an initiative aimed at reducing carbon dioxide emissions and trimming drug distribution costs.  Working with IBM researchers and business consultants, North America’s largest distributor of prescription drugs is bringing a new level of intelligence to the pharmaceutical supply chain as well as its own business operations.   

McKesson supplies one-third of the prescription drugs used by hospitals and pharmacies in North America every day.  The company provides pharmaceuticals to more than 40,000 health locations in the U.S., ranging from hospitals and health systems to community pharmacies and national chain stores to the Department of Veterans Affairs.    (more…)
