IBM to Acquire Cloudant: Open, Cloud Database Service Helps Organizations Simplify Mobile, Web App and Big Data Development

ARMONK, N.Y. – 24 Feb 2014: IBM today announced a definitive agreement to acquire Boston, MA-based Cloudant, Inc., a privately held database-as-a-service (DBaaS) provider that enables developers to easily and quickly create next generation mobile and web apps.  

Cloudant will extend IBM’s Big Data and Analytics, Cloud Computing and Mobile offerings by further helping clients take advantage of these key growth initiatives. Financial terms were not disclosed. (more…)

Die Utopie ist tot – lang lebe die Utopie!

Was in älterern filmischen und literarischen Darstellungen als Dystopie erschien, ist zum Teil heute Realität. Günter Hack diagnostiziert in der FAZ das Ende der Utopien. Doch vielleicht hat gerade das Internet das Potential, sich selbst neu zu erschaffen und neue Utopien zu entwickeln. Das Neue – es ist heute dringend erforderlich! Und das nicht nur in utopischer Form, sondern auch in Form neuerer rechtlicher Rahmenbedingungen für den Datenschutz, aber auch in Form einer Änderung unserer Gewohnheiten. Da hilft es auch nichts, dass die Perspektive außerhalb der westlichen Hemisphäre ganz anders aussieht, wie uns Leena Simon von ihrer Reise aus Indien berichtet. Manchmal muss mit Traditionen auch gebrochen werden, um ein neues Leben zu ermöglichen.

Made in IBM Labs: Scientists Set New Speed Record for Big Data

Ultra-high definition 4K movie or 40,000 songs from the Cloud could be downloaded in a few seconds

SAN FRANCISCO – 13 Feb 2014: IBM today announced that it has achieved a new technological advancement that will helpimprove Internet speeds to 200 – 400 Gigabits per second (Gb/s) at extremely low power.

The speed boost is based on a device that can be used to improve transferring Big Data between clouds and data centers four times faster than current technology. At this speed 160 Gigabytes, the equivalent of a two-hour, 4K ultra-high definition movie or 40,000 songs, could be downloaded in only a few seconds. The device was presented at the International Solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco.  (more…)
