According to study co-authored by UCLA ecologist, the answer is devastating news for Earth’s largest animals

Many of the world’s largest herbivores — including several species of elephants, rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses and gorillas — are in danger of becoming extinct. And if current trends continue, the loss of these animals would have drastic implications not only for the species themselves, but also for other animals and the environments and ecosystems in which they live, according to a new report by an international team of scientists. Die Artenvielfalt der Pflanzen und Schmetterlinge in Frankfurt hat in den letzten 200 Jahren abgenommen, die Fischbestände dagegen erholen sich wieder und zahlreiche neue Tier- und Pflanzenarten fühlen sich infolge der klimatischen Erwärmung in der hessischen Großstadt wohl. Auf knapp 300 Seiten wird die Veränderung der Flora und Fauna Frankfurts in dem heute neu erschienenen Band der Kleinen Senckenberg-Reihe „Stadtnatur im Wandel – Artenvielfalt in Frankfurt am Main“ anschaulich vorgestellt. This conclusion holds true under both a reduced greenhouse gas emission scenario that stabilizes climate warming and another scenario where emissions and warming continue at the current pace, according to updated U.S. Geological Survey research models. 510 plus Eins: Tiger-Teenager in Russland wieder ausgewildert

Mit einem Sprung in die Freiheit! Nach seinem mehrmonatigen Aufenthalt in der Tiger-Auffangstation Utyos wurde der Amur-Tiger „Uporny“ („Sturkopf“) im Anyuisky-Nationalpark wieder in die Freiheit entlassen. Um gefährliche Zwischenfälle und Konflikte zu verhindern war der halbwüchsige Tiger im Herbst vergangenen Jahres in der russischen Provinz Khabarovsky eingefangen worden. Er hatte sich in der Nähe einer Siedlung herumgetrieben und mehrere Hunde gerissen. Mit Unterstützung des WWF war das damals extrem abgemagerte Tier von Veterinärmedizinern untersucht und in der Station wieder aufgepäppelt worden. Seinen Namen erhielt der Tiger-Teenager von WWF-Mitarbeitern aufgrund seines widerspenstigen Charakters.
