NABU fordert Kompetenzstelle für den Wolfs-Schutz

In Deutschland sind innerhalb nur einer Woche drei Wölfe zu Tode gekommen. Nachdem am vergangenen Freitag ein Wolf illegal in der sächsischen Lausitz geschossen wurde, starben zwei weitere Anfang dieser Woche durch Verkehrsunfälle: Bereits am Montag wurde ein Wolf auf einer Bundesstraße im nördlichen Sachsen-Anhalt überfahren, einen weiteren erwischte auf dem Berliner Ring in Brandenburg. Menschen kamen dabei nicht zu Schaden. Zuletzt war am 16. November ein Wolf bei einem Verkehrsunfall getötet worden – fast an identischer Stelle wie das Tier in Sachsen-Anhalt am Montag. (more…)

“Virtual Reality Design for Science” is a co-listed class at Brown and RISD that unites artists, designers, computer scientists, and experts in scientific visualization. The goal: to create tools for immersive interaction with scientific data. Test case for the course: the flight mechanics of bats.

Fatty Acids Crucial to Embryonic Development

Baltimore, MD— One classical question in developmental biology is how different tissue types arise in the correct position of the developing embryo. While one signaling pathway that controls this process has been well described, unexpected findings from a team led by Carnegie’s Steven Farber reveal the importance of polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolism in this process. It is published online December 12 in Developmental Cell.

Fatty acids serve as sources of energy, the building materials of cellular membranes, and as signals for sending messages between cells. Enzymes are needed to activate free fatty acids so that they are useful for cellular processes. The enzymes that perform this function are called acyl-CoA synthetases, often shortened to ACS. Millions of people across the world live or depend on deltas for their livelihoods.

Formed at the lowest part of a river where its water flow slows and spreads into the sea, deltas are sediment-rich, biodiverse areas, a valuable source of seafood, fertile ground for agriculture, and host to ports important for transportation.

At least half of the deltas around the world are so-called “wave dominated deltas” – open to the sea and under the impact of wave erosion. And many more deltas will come under wave dominance as dammed rivers carry less and less sediment. In a warming climate, sea levels are rising and storms are increasing in frequency and severity, posing threats to these deltas and the people and habitats dependent on them. (more…)

WWF stellt animalische Jahresbilanz für den Artenschutz vor

Für Löwen, Elefanten, Nashörner, Finnwale und Pinguine war 2013 laut WWF-Jahresbilanz kein gutes Jahr. „Das größte Artensterben seit dem Verschwinden der Dinosaurier dauert an. Und der Mensch ist der Verursacher“, warnt daher Eberhard Brandes, Vorstand des WWF Deutschland anlässlich des Jahreswechsels. „Die Menschheit lebt über ihre Verhältnisse. Eine Folge davon ist der dramatische, immer weiter voranschreitende Verlust der Artenvielfalt.“ Lebensraumzerstörung, Überfischung und Klimawandel machten deutlich, dass die Menschheit ihr Naturkapital leichtfertig verspiele. World’s mangroves, salt marshes hold potential for reducing carbon emissions

Mangroves, the dense forests found along tropical and subtropical coastlines, have some specialized trees that can take in air through their roots at low tide and excrete salt right out of their leaves. The unusual ecosystems can also absorb large amounts of carbon dioxide, making them a natural solution for controlling greenhouse gases.

Disrupt them, however, and they’ll put that carbon right back into the atmosphere. (more…)

Signalers vs. strong silent types: Sparrows exude personalities during fights

Like humans, some song sparrows are more effusive than others, at least when it comes to defending their territories. New findings from the University of Washington show that consistent individual differences exist not only for how aggressive individual song sparrows are but also for how much they use their signals to communicate their aggressive intentions.

The findings, published online Dec. 4 in Proceedings of the Royal Society B, show that while many birds signal their intentions clearly, other “strong silent types” go immediately to aggressive behavior and ultimately attack without first signaling their intentions. (more…)
