New Technique Targets Specific Areas of Cancer Cells with Different Drugs

Researchers have developed a technique for creating nanoparticles that carry two different cancer-killing drugs into the body and deliver those drugs to separate parts of the cancer cell where they will be most effective. The technique was developed by researchers at North Carolina State University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

“In testing on laboratory mice, our technique resulted in significant improvement in breast cancer tumor reduction as compared to conventional treatment techniques,” says Dr. Zhen Gu, senior author of a paper on the research and an assistant professor in the joint biomedical engineering program at NC State and UNC-Chapel Hill. “Akademik Schokalski” im antarktischen Packeis fest. Wie entsteht
diese Form des Meereises und was sind seine Besonderheiten? Darüber
soll es im heutigen Thema des Tages gehen.
Packeis ist eine Form von Meereis, die nicht mit der Küste verbunden
ist, sondern von Wind und Wellen bewegt wird. Dabei muss eine
zusammenhängende Eisdecke von etwa 80% vorhanden sein, damit man vom
Packeis spricht.

Im September 2013 betrug die Fläche der Meereisbedeckung in der
Arktis etwa 5 Mio. qkm, in der Antarktis 20 Mio. qkm. (more…)

NASA’s Kepler Provides Insights on Enigmatic Planets

More than three-quarters of the planet candidates discovered by NASA’s Kepler spacecraft have sizes ranging from that of Earth to that of Neptune, which is nearly four times as big as Earth. Such planets dominate the galactic census but are not represented in our own solar system. Astronomers don’t know how they form or if they are made of rock, water or gas.

The Kepler team today reports on four years of ground-based follow-up observations targeting Kepler’s exoplanet systems at the American Astronomical Society meeting in Washington. These observations confirm the numerous Kepler discoveries are indeed planets and yield mass measurements of these enigmatic worlds that vary between Earth and Neptune in size. (more…)

A little-remembered Jewish culture in Germany and Austria between the 1870s and 1930s was a hotbed of ideas which drove the formation of the European Union, according to new research.

Literary and film scholar Dr Cathy Gelbin from The University of Manchester says cosmopolitan German speaking Jewish intellectuals, many of whom met in the coffee houses of Berlin, Vienna and Prague, were among the first to see their identity as European.

Her co-author on the Arts and Humanities Research Council funded study is the eminent cultural and literary historian Professor Sander Gilman from Emory University in Atlanta. (more…)
