Carvacrol, the primary active component in oregano oil, effectively kills norovirus, a common cause of foodborne illness outbreaks in hospitals, schools and cruise ships
A study led by University of Arizona researcher Kelly Bright has found that carvacrol – the substance in oregano oil that gives the pizza herb its distinctive warm and aromatic smell and flavor – is effective against norovirus, causing the breakdown of the virus’ tough outer coat. Denn (noch) ist das Internet international angelegt. Wie kollektive Debatten im Internet auf kreative Art und Weise geführt werden können, zeigen etwa Initiativen wie die ausgerufene „Blogparade“ – wie Partizipationsprojekte international funktionieren können das Projekt Hatebase. Zum anderen wird deutlich, dass es sich bei den Debatten über Netzpolitik und Digitalisierung um gesellschaftliche Debatten handelt, die politisch geführt werden müssen. Der Internet-Aktivist Jens Best fand dafür beim Digitalen Salon vor ein paar Tagen die polemischen, aber richtigen Worte: „Wenn Angela Merkel sich auf das Schengen-Netz einlässt, wird sie die Kanzlerin der Deutschen Telekom“.
Earth Hour 2014: WWF sucht Vorkämpfer für den Klimaschutz
Der WWF Deutschland sucht „Klimahelden“, die mit ihrem persönlichen Einsatz einen konkreten Beitrag zum Klimaschutz leisten. Die Aktion ist Teil der weltweiten Klimaschutzaktion Earth Hour, die dieses Jahr am 29. März stattfindet. „Wir wollen zeigen, dass man auch mit kleinen Schritten Großes leisten kann. Es gibt viele Menschen in Deutschland, die nicht auf die Politik warten und mit kleinen oder großen Projekten schon heute etwas fürs Klima tun“, sagt Silke Hahn, WWF-Kampagnenreferentin. Berkeley Lab’s Advanced Light Source reveals inner-workings of essential protein found throughout life.
Maybe you’ve seen the movies or played with toy Transformers, those shape-shifting machines that morph in response to whatever challenge they face. It turns out that DNA-repair machines in your cells use a similar approach to fight cancer and other diseases, according to research led by scientists from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab).
As reported in a pair of new studies, the scientists gained new insights into how a protein complex called Mre11-Rad50 reshapes itself to take on different DNA-repair tasks. (more…)

UCLA researchers publish landmark meta-analysis of sexual preferences at ovulation
If she loves you and then she loves you not, don’t blame the petals of that daisy. Blame evolution.
UCLA researchers analyzed dozens of published and unpublished studies on how women’s preferences for mates change throughout the menstrual cycle. Their findings suggest that ovulating women have evolved to prefer mates who display sexy traits – such as a masculine body type and facial features, dominant behavior and certain scents – but not traits typically desired in long-term mates. Heute ist meteorologischer Frühlingsbeginn und so langsam aber sicher
werden die Tage bei uns immer länger. Derzeit dürfen wir uns schon
über knapp elf Sonnenstunden am Tag freuen (zumindest theoretisch –
praktisch verhindern die vielen Wolken das heute vor allem im
Westen). Ganz anders sieht es da einige tausend Kilometer nördlich
von uns aus: Am Nordpol wird die Sonne erst wieder Mitte März
aufgehen. Dort herrschte dann für ein knappes halbes Jahr Dunkelheit. (more…)
