Das religiöse Alltagsleben von MuslimInnen in Österreich ist facettenreicher und vielfältiger als weithin angenommen. Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt eine empirische Untersuchung des Instituts für Islamische Studien der Universität Wien. Dass es sich bei der muslimischen Bevölkerung in Österreich um eine homogene Gruppe mit durchwegs einheitlicher Glaubenspraxis handeln würde, erweist sich jedenfalls als Klischee. Vielmehr, so die Aussage der Studie, orientiert sich deren religiöse Alltagspraxis keineswegs strikt an den religiösen Pflichten des Islams, sondern weicht davon auch durchaus ab.
Im Rahmen der qualitativen Studie wurden Interviews in mehreren Bundesländern geführt, die ein lebendiges, alltagsnahes Bild der Religiosität und der religiösen Alltagspraxis muslimischer Bevölkerungsgruppen in Österreich vermitteln. Was den täglichen Umgangs mit Religion betrifft, konnten die ForscherInnen rund um Ednan Aslan fünf Haupttendenzen feststellen: (1) Distanzierung und Abwendung von Religion, (2) ein säkularisierter Umgang mit Religion, (3) religiöse Emanzipation, (4) ein pragmatischer Umgang mit Religion sowie (5) der Rückzug in die Religion. COLUMBIA, Mo. – Despite differences in rituals and beliefs among the world’s major religions, spirituality often enhances health regardless of a person’s faith, according to University of Missouri researchers. The MU researchers believe that health care providers could take advantage of this correlation between health – particularly mental health – and spirituality by tailoring treatments and rehabilitation programs to accommodate an individual’s spiritual inclinations.
“In many ways, the results of our study support the idea that spirituality functions as a personality trait,” said Dan Cohen, assistant teaching professor of religious studies at MU and one of the co-authors of the study. “With increased spirituality people reduce their sense of self and feel a greater sense of oneness and connectedness with the rest of the universe. What was interesting was that frequency of participation in religious activities or the perceived degree of congregational support was not found to be significant in the relationships between personality, spirituality, religion and health.” (more…)
EAST LANSING, Mich. — Since Sept. 11, it has become increasingly common to hear about Muslims who condemn all non-Muslims – or “infidels” – to hell, but this has never been a foundation of Islamic thought, argues a Michigan State University professor who recently published a first-of-its-kind book on non-Muslim salvation.

COLUMBIA, Mo. — In the past few years, the video game industry has grown from a niche market into a major part of mainstream media. This increase in popularity and use of technology has allowed video game developers to insert more detail and nuance into the storylines of their games. Many video games have begun incorporating religion as a key aspect to plot points and story lines. Greg Perreault, a doctoral student in the University of Missouri School of Journalism, found that the many newer-generation video games equate religion with violence in the game narratives. (more…)
