Fukushima: Die Katastrophe setzt sich fort

Ein neues Leck am Kernkraftwerk Fukushima verseucht die Umwelt deutlich schlimmer als bisher angenommen. Mit 300 Tonnen ausgelaufenem radioaktiven Wasser ist es der bisher größte Störfall seit der Katastrophe vom März 2011.

Einer von hunderten Tanks auf dem AKW-Gelände, die zur Aufbewahrung des Kühlwassers dienen, ist leck geschlagen. Hatte Tepco, der Betreiber des Atomkraftwerks, anfangs noch 120 Liter ausgelaufenes Wasser gemeldet, musste er am Mittwoch seine Aussage berichtigen: Die 2.500-fache Menge radioaktiv verseuchtes Wasser war aus dem Leck getreten. “Wie viel Inkompetenz und Vertuschung von Tepco toleriert die japanische Regierung noch?”, kommentiert Heinz Smital, Atomexperte bei Greenpeace, die Fehlinformation. Study Highlights How Twitter is Used to Share Information After a Disaster

A study from North Carolina State University shows how people used Twitter following the 2011 nuclear disaster in Japan, highlighting challenges for using the social media tool to share information. The study also indicates that social media haven’t changed what we communicate so much as how quickly we can disseminate it.

“I wanted to see if Twitter was an effective tool for sharing meaningful information about nuclear risk in the wake of the disaster at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant,” says Dr. Andrew Binder, an assistant professor of communication at NC State and author of a paper describing the work. “I knew people would be sharing information, but I wanted to see whether it was anecdotal or substantive, and whether users were providing analysis and placing information in context. Fukushima Lesson: Prepare for Unanticipated Nuclear Accidents

ANN ARBOR, Mich.— A year after the crisis at Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, scientists and engineers remain largely in the dark when it comes to fundamental knowledge about how nuclear fuels behave under extreme conditions, according to a University of Michigan nuclear waste expert and his colleagues.

In a review article in this week’s edition of the journal Science, U-M’s Rodney Ewing and two colleagues call for an ambitious, long-term national research program to study how nuclear fuels behave under the extreme conditions present during core-melt events like those that occurred at Fukushima following the March 11, 2011, magnitude 9.0 earthquake and tsunami. Responding to the Radiation Threat

*Berkeley Lab Researchers Developing Promising Treatment for Safely Decontaminating Humans Exposed to Radioactive Actinides*

The New York Times recently reported that in the darkest moments of the triple meltdown last year of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, Japanese officials considered the evacuation of the nearly 36 million residents of the Tokyo metropolitan area. The consideration of so drastic an action reflects the harsh fact that in the aftermath of a major radiation exposure event, such as a nuclear reactor accident or a “dirty bomb” terrorist attack, treatments for mass contamination are antiquated and very limited. The only chemical agent now available for decontamination – a compound known as DTPA – is a Cold War relic that must be administered intravenously and only partially removes some of the deadly actinides – the radioactive chemical elements spanning from actinium to lawrencium on the periodic table – that pose the greatest health threats.
