Neuer Fund gibt Aufschluss über Einwanderung des modernen Menschen nach Europa

Bisher fehlte jede Spur von jenen modernen Menschen (Homo sapiens), die von Afrika aus ihren Weg nach Norden nahmen, um vor ca. 45.000 Jahren in Europa anzukommen und alle anderen menschlichen Lebensformen zu ersetzen. Nun wurde im Norden Israels in der Manot-Höhle ein Fund gemacht, der diese Lücke im Wissen über unsere eigene Herkunft schließt. Die rund 55.000 Jahre alten Überreste eines Gehirnschädels konnten von einem Team aus israelischen ForscherInnen und Anthropologen der Universität Wien sowie des Max-Planck-Institutes Leipzig mit modernsten Computer-Methoden untersucht werden. Die Ergebnisse, welche einen Teil der Menschheitsgeschichte in Raum und Zeit neu verbinden, erscheinen nun aktuell im Fachjournal “Nature”. (more…)

Scientists draw conclusions after review of more than 150 studies; suggest further scientific study

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Unconventional oil and gas (UOG) operations combine directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” to release natural gas from underground rock. Recent discussions have centered on potential air and water pollution from chemicals used in these processes and how it affects the more than 15 million Americans living within one mile of UOG operations. Now, Susan C. Nagel, a researcher with the University of Missouri, and national colleagues have conducted the largest review to date of research centered on fracking byproducts and their effects on human reproductive and developmental health. They determined that exposure to chemicals released in fracturing may be harmful to human health in men, women and children and recommend further scientific study. (more…)

Eine geschickte Förderung sauberer Technologien kann einen niedrigen CO2-Preis teilweise ausgleichen und damit helfen, das Zwei-Grad-Ziel einzuhalten. Das zeigt eine neue Studie. Selbst wenn der Welt-Klimagipfel Ende des Jahres erfolgreich ist, führt dies im kommenden Jahrzehnt voraussichtlich nicht zu einem hinreichend hohen CO2-Preis und entsprechend starken Emissionsminderungen. Ein neuartiges Politikpaket könnte aber den Einstieg in wirkungsvolle Klimapolitik ermöglichen: konkret durch einen zunächst niedrigen Mindestpreis für den Ausstoß von CO2, durch die Förderung erneuerbarer Energien, durch den Verzicht auf neue Kohlekraftwerke, sowie durch Demonstrationsanlagen zur Kohlenstoffabscheidung (CCS). Jedes einzelne dieser Werkzeuge wird bereits heute in manchen Ländern genutzt. Würden sie kombiniert und weltweit eingesetzt, könnte das den Weg für eine klimafreundliche Wirtschaft bereiten, die dann stärkere CO2-Minderungen nach 2030 möglich macht. (more…)

Mehr Amur-Leoparden in Russland

Bestandsverdoppelung seit 2007: Wieder 70 Individuen in freier Wildbahn. / WWF: Amur-Leoparden zählen zu seltensten Säugetieren weltweit.

Laut einer großflächigen Zählung ist der russische Bestand an Amur-Leoparden auf etwa 57 Exemplare angestiegen. Der Großteil der Population findet sich demnach nahe der Stadt Wladiwostok. Doch auch im benachbarten China sollen wieder zwölf bis fünfzehn Raubkatzen unterwegs sein. Damit hat sich der weltweite Gesamtbestand in freier Wildbahn auf rund 70 Tiere erhöht. Bei der Zählung im Jahr 2007, vor der Ausweisung des Schutzgebietes „Leopardovy“, war man von gerade einmal 35 Individuen ausgegangen. Amur-Leoparden zählen laut Naturschutzorganisation WWF zu den seltensten Säugetieren weltweit. (more…)

Freshwater fish with bellies full of shrews – one trout a few years back was found to have eaten 19 – aren’t as random as scientists have thought.

ANN ARBOR — Why did fans and sponsors such as Nike drop Lance Armstrong but stay loyal to Tiger Woods? Probably because Armstrong’s doping scandal took place on the field, unlike Wood’s off-the-field extramarital affairs, according to new studies.

A series of studies conducted by University of Michigan doctoral student Joon Sung Lee suggests that when fans and consumers can separate an athlete’s immoral behavior from their athletic performance, they’re much more forgiving than if the bad behavior could impact athletic performance or the outcome of the game.
