Arctic excursion explores how sea life copes with continuous winter darkness
When the North Pole tilts away from the sun during the winter, the Arctic region plunges into weeks of continuous darkness. The sun never peeks above the horizon, casting only a twinge of blue twilight at midday, and the moon dimly illuminates the landscape at night if conditions are clear.
People living in this “polar night” have adapted to the darkness using artificial light, but how ocean inhabitants cope remains to be seen. (more…)

Grüner Filmpreis „Green Me“ in Berlin verliehen
Die Preisträger des grünen Filmfestivals „Green Me“ stehen fest: Mit den „Green Me“-Awards wurden in Berlin der Dokumentarfilm „Population Boom“ des Österreichers Werner Boote, der Spielfilm „Beasts of the Southern Wild“ und der Kinderfilm „Der Lorax“ ausgezeichnet. Der Sonderpreis für den besten Wolfsfilm ging an die Dokumentation „Deutschlands wilde Wölfe, wie sie wirklich sind“ des Tierfilmers Sebastian Körner. Die Preise wurden im Rahmen einer festlichen Gala im TIPI am Kanzleramt vergeben, zu der auch der Schirmherr des Festivals, Klaus Töpfer, ein Grußwort hielt. „Die Qualität aller 15 im Wettbewerb des Festivals laufenden Filme war in diesem Jahr immens. Jeder Preisträger des ‚Green Me‘-Awards zeigt auf seine eigene Art, was grüne Filme sein können: unterhaltsam, bildgewaltig und aufklärend“, so Jury-Vorsitzender Bernward Geier. (more…)

Winterspiele im russischen Sotschi eröffnet. Gestern, am Dienstag,
hat sich der größte Teil der deutschen Delegation auf den Weg in
Richtung Osten zur russischen Schwarzmeerküste aufgemacht, um bei den
Wettkämpfen um Gold, Silber und Bronze auf Schnee und Eis
mitzumischen. Jedoch ist die Küstenstadt Sotschi nicht gerade bekannt
für winterliche Bedingungen mit Schnee und Eis. Vielmehr können lokal
sogar Palmen begutachtet werden, die ein Symbol für ein maritimes und
mildes Klima sind. Aus diesem Grund wurden für die Kufen-Disziplinen
große Hallen gebaut und die Schneewettkämpfe in die etwa 30 km
nördlich gelegene Schneeregion um “Krasnaja Poljana” in Höhengebieten
zwischen 500 und 1000 m ausgegliedert. Doch auf welches Wetter müssen

Women are up to 83 percent more likely to experience repeat abuse by their male partners if a weapon is used in the initial abuse incident, according to a new study that has implications for victims, counselors and police.
Michigan State University researcher Amy Bonomi and colleagues studied the domestic abuse police reports of nearly 6,000 couples in Seattle during a two-year period. An estimated one in four women in the United States experience domestic violence at least once in their lifetime. (more…)
Students can experience convenience and benefits but at the same time, barriers of E-learning. These barriers hinder the learning process that is why it is important to evaluate the kind of barrier and know how to survive it.
Technology Issues
E-learning doesn’t require students to be very good with computers, software, and Internet. It only requires little technical skill. But there are some people who really find it hard to deal with technology issues. If they won’t do anything to resolve it, they will only feel frustrated that will only lead to not continuing the learning process. (more…)
