An der antarktischen Küste lebt keine einzige Pinguinkolonie in Isolation. Kaiserpinguine bewegen sich rund um den vereisten Kontinent und pflanzen sich miteinander fort. Dadurch bilden sie eine einzige, rund um den Pol zusammenhängende Population. Obwohl der Großteil der Individuen zur Partnerwahl zum Brüten und für die Aufzucht der Jungen an die eigene Geburtsstätte zurückkehrt, migriert ein gewisser Anteil und siedelt sich bei anderen Kolonien an. Wie ein internationales ForscherInnenteam entdeckt hat, wird so die volle genetische Durchmischung garantiert. Die Ergebnisse wurden kürzlich im prestigeträchtigen Journal Nature Communications publiziert.

Stuttgart/Berlin – Der Landesapothekerverband Baden-Württemberg und der WWF sagen den Plastiktüten den Kampf an: Am 1. Juli startet die gemeinsame „Aktion Tütenlos“, mit der die Kundinnen und Kunden der Apotheker zum bewussteren Umgang mit Plastiktüten animiert werden sollen. Ziel ist es, den Verbrauch der umweltschädlichen Einwegtaschen zu senken. Pro eingesparter Tüte spenden die Apotheker zudem einen „Umweltcent“ an den WWF und unterstützen so zusätzlich die Umweltschutzarbeit der Organisation. (more…)

Berkeley Lab’s HiRES to provide new views of material changes, chemical reactions
A unique rapid-fire electron source—originally built as a prototype for driving next-generation X-ray lasers—will help scientists at the Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) study ultrafast chemical processes and changes in materials at the atomic scale.
