Bislang lernen Forstwissenschaftler: Je älter ein Baum, desto weniger CO2 kann er aufnehmen. Eine neue internationale Studie beweist nun das Gegenteil. Die größten Bäume weisen die höchste Leistungsfähigkeit in Sachen Kohlendioxidspeicherung und -aufnahme auf.

Die aktuelle Studie “Rate of tree carbon accumulation increases continuously with tree size” erschien in der Fachzeitschrift “Nature” und ist das Ergebnis einer Untersuchung von 38 Forschungseinrichtungen, darunter auch das Deutsche Zentrum für integrative Biodiversitätsforschung (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig. Q. Was ist Liebe? Wie würden Sie es definieren?

Katja: Ja, es ist sehr schwierig zu definieren, was Liebe ist. Man kann es schlecht beschreiben, also man liebt ja doch, ich würde sagen mehrere Menschen. Also das Gefühl jemanden gern zu haben, zu mögen….und ja schwierig zu definieren, die richtige Liebe, aber was ist richtige Liebe?…ja..(lächeln)

Q. Was ist Ihr liebstes Liebes-Zitat? Lesen Sie Liebesgedichte?

Katja: Ahh…so richtig lese ich jetzt Liebesgedichte nicht, aber für mich hat jemand ein Liebesgedicht geschrieben und das war sehr schön und da war ich wirklich gerührt und also es hat mich beflügelt, dass jemand für mich ein Liebesgedicht schreibt. Das Gedicht war echt schön, dass man so was denken und fühlen kann. (more…)

COLUMBIA, Mo. — Understanding how thoughts of mortality influence individuals’ beliefs sheds light on the commonalities among different groups’ motivations and could help ease tensions between opposing viewpoints, according to University of Missouri experiments that tested the relationship between awareness of death and belief in a higher power. The study found that thoughts of death increased atheists, Christians, Muslims and agnostics conviction in their own world views. For example, contrary to the wartime aphorism that there are no atheists in foxholes, thoughts of death did not cause atheists to express belief in a deity.

“Our study suggests that atheists’ and religious believers’ world views have the same practical goal,” said Kenneth Vail, lead author and doctoral student in psychological science in MU’s College of Arts and Science. “Both groups seek a coherent world view to manage the fear of death and link themselves to a greater and immortal entity, such as a supreme being, scientific progress or a nation. If people were more aware of this psychological similarity, perhaps there might be more understanding and less conflict among groups with different beliefs.” (more…)

Due to heavy snow melting as the temperature turns to be ‘mild’ and simultaneous rainfall, 2011’s Winter highwater is the highest since 1946 in the Saale river in Halle (Saxony-Anhalt). The flood water reached a maximum of 6.92 m on the gauge of Halle Trotha. A record of 7 m would cause a ‘disaster alarm’. (more…)
