Jeder Alpenfluss ein „kleiner Amazonas“

Hotspot-Projekt „Alpenflusslandschaften“ startet.

Die Alpen zählen laut WWF zu den wertvollsten Ökoregionen Europas und ihre naturnahen Wildflüsse bilden Hotspots der Vielfalt von Arten und Lebensräumen. Ein neues, weitreichendes Naturschutzprojekt soll die einzigartigen, ökologischen Hotspots an Isar, Loisach, Ammer und Lech schützen und widerherstellen. Die Projektregion in Oberbayern umfasst ein Gebiet vom Tiefland bis in die Alpen. Die zentrale Anlaufstelle des rund 3,5 Millionen Euro umfassenden Projekts wird das WWF-Büro in Weilheim sein. Weitere Stützpunkt sind das LBV-Büro in Wolfratshausen und die Projektstelle „Lebensraum Lechtal“ in Schongau.   (more…)

Alte Bäume sind bessere Kohlenstoffspeicher

Bislang lernen Forstwissenschaftler: Je älter ein Baum, desto weniger CO2 kann er aufnehmen. Eine neue internationale Studie beweist nun das Gegenteil. Die größten Bäume weisen die höchste Leistungsfähigkeit in Sachen Kohlendioxidspeicherung und -aufnahme auf.

Die aktuelle Studie “Rate of tree carbon accumulation increases continuously with tree size” erschien in der Fachzeitschrift “Nature” und ist das Ergebnis einer Untersuchung von 38 Forschungseinrichtungen, darunter auch das Deutsche Zentrum für integrative Biodiversitätsforschung (iDiv) Halle-Jena-Leipzig. Die Wissenschaftler untersuchten mehr als 400 Baumarten. (more…)
