WWF gratuliert Emil Dister zum Deutschen Naturschutzpreis 2013

Bonn – Der mit 10.000 Euro dotierte Ehrenpreis des Deutschen Naturschutzpreises 2013 geht in diesem Jahr an Prof. Dr. Emil Dister, den langjährigen Leiter des WWF-Auen-Instituts. Das Bundesamt für Naturschutz würdigt den Ökologen für seinen Einsatz für den Erhalt und die Renaturierung der Flüsse und Auen.

Der WWF Deutschland freut sich mit dem Preisträger über die Auszeichnung. „Emil Dister ist ein unermüdlicher Kämpfer für den Schutz der Auen. Er tritt seit Jahrzehnten dafür ein, den Flüssen mehr Raum zu geben, um Natur- und Hochwasserschutz gleichermaßen zu stärken. Erst allmählich kommt diese Botschaft auch bei der Politik an. Sein Engagement zeigt, dass man einen langen Atem braucht, um Naturschutzprojekte umzusetzen. Aber der Einsatz lohnt: Die Resultate dieser Forschungs- und Naturschutzarbeit zeigen sich an einer Vielzahl Projekten“, würdigt Eberhard Brandes, Vorstand des WWF Deutschland den Preisträger. IBM Closes Acquisition of CSL International

ARMONK, N.Y – 30 Aug 2013: IBM today announced it has completed the acquisition of CSL International, a leading provider of virtualization management technology for IBM’s zEnterprise System. CSL International was a privately held company headquartered in Herzliya Pituach, Israel. Financial terms were not disclosed.

The acquisition deepens the consolidation and cloud capabilities of IBM zEnterprise technology by offering simplified set up and management of the virtualization environment. CSL International’s CSL-Wave software enables clients to monitor and manage their z/VM and Linux on System z environments using a powerful drag and drop interface. The software will become part of the IBM zEnterprise portfolio in early 2014. (more…)

Saturn Moon May Have Rigid Ice Shell

An analysis of gravity and topography data from the Saturnian moon Titan obtained by NASA’s Cassini spacecraft suggests there could be something unexpected about the moon’s outer ice shell. The findings, published on Aug. 28 in the journal Nature, suggest that Titan’s ice shell could be rigid, and that relatively small topographic features on the surface could be associated with large ice “roots” extending into the underlying ocean.

The study was led by planetary scientists Douglas Hemingway and Francis Nimmo at the University of California, Santa Cruz, who used data from Cassini. The researchers were surprised to find a counterintuitive relationship between gravity and topography. (more…)

Die erste Meereschutzkonferenz nach Rio+20 ist vorbei. Und das Schiff scheint Segel gesetzt zu haben, zwar langsam und gehemmt von eisigem Gegenwind, aber es ist in See gestochen. Zu diesem Ergebnis kommt das Bündnis „High Seas Alliance“ (HSA), an dem sich neben anderen Meeresschutzorganisationen auch Greenpeace beteiligt.

Im Zentrum der Verhandlungen stand ein neues Durchführungsabkommen im Sinne des Seerechtsübereinkommens der Vereinten Nationen (SRÜ). Dieses erhielt von vielen Staaten starke Unterstützung, darunter die G77 und China, die Europäische Union, Australien, Mexico und Neuseeland. Trotzdem verlangsamten die Blockadeversuche einer kleinen Minderheit dieses Prozess deutlich. (more…)

Hydraulic Fracturing Fluids Likely Harmed Threatened Kentucky Fish Species

Hydraulic fracturing fluids are believed to be the cause of the widespread death or distress of aquatic species in Kentucky’s Acorn Fork, after spilling from nearby natural gas well sites. These findings are the result of a joint study by the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The Acorn Fork, a small Appalachian creek, is habitat for the federally threatened Blackside dace, a small colorful minnow. The Acorn Fork is designated by Kentucky as an Outstanding State Resource Waters. (more…)

WWF und Schutzstation Wattenmeer zum Start der Miesmuschelsaison: bestehende Praxis der Muschelfischerei in Schleswig Holstein ist unverträglich mit dem Nationalpark

Hamburg/Husum: Zum heutigen Auftakt der Fangsaison auf Miesmuscheln im schleswig-holsteinischen Wattenmeer üben die Umweltverbände Schutzstation Wattenmeer und WWF Kritik an der Muschelfischerei. Die natürlichen Miesmuschelbestände wurden auf einen Bruchteil reduziert, doch es dürfen weiter wilde Muscheln gefangen werden. Zusätzlich errichtet man im Nationalpark bauliche Anlagen zur Saatmuschelgewinnung. (more…)
