Heralding a new age of terrific timekeeping, a research group at JILA—a joint institute of the University of Colorado Boulder and the National Institute of Standards and Technology—has unveiled an experimental strontium atomic clock that has set new world records for both precision and stability.

Researchers at Berkeley Lab’s Advanced Light Source Find New Form of Quantum Matter
The discovery of what is essentially a 3D version of graphene – the 2D sheets of carbon through which electrons race at many times the speed at which they move through silicon – promises exciting new things to come for the high-tech industry, including much faster transistors and far more compact hard drives. A collaboration of researchers at the U.S Department of Energy (DOE)’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) has discovered that sodium bismuthide can exist as a form of quantum matter called a three-dimensional topological Dirac semi-metal (3DTDS). This is the first experimental confirmation of 3D Dirac fermions in the interior or bulk of a material, a novel state that was only recently proposed by theorists. (more…)
Preclinical studies show that gene therapy can improve muscle strength in small- and large-animal models of a fatal congenital childhood disease know as X-linked myotubular myopathy.
The findings, appearing as the cover story in the January 22, 2014 issue of Science Translational Medicine, also demonstrate the feasibility of future clinical trials of gene therapy for this devastating disease. (more…)

Die Bilder machten betroffen: In Kambodscha streikten Zehntausende Arbeiterinnen und Arbeiter von Textilfabriken. Sie gingen auf die Strasse für bessere Arbeitsbedingungen und verlangten eine Verdoppelung des monatlichen Mindestlohns von 80 auf 160 Dollar. Mit aller Härte und scharfer Munition ging die Militärpolizei in der kambodschanischen Hauptstadt Phnom Penh gegen die Demonstranten vor. Es gab Tote, Verletzte und Verhaftete. (more…)

A team from the Georgia Tech Research Institute (GTRI) has produced an advanced web-based tool that lets physically separated participants collaborate on model-based systems engineering projects. Known as the Framework for Assessing Cost and Technology (FACT), the program utilizes open-source software components to allow users to visualize a system’s potential expense alongside its performance, reliability and other factors. Polar bears and Inuit communities have become victims in the public war of words on climate change and wildlife conservation, according to researchers from Britain and Canada.
University of Exeter geographer Dr Martina Tyrrell and Dr Doug Clark from the University of Saskatchewan’s School of Environment and Sustainability examined the fallout from a media campaign in the run-up to the March 2013 proposal to severely limit or prohibit trade in polar bears under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Die Steigerung der Energieeffizienz hat für die deutsche Wirtschaft 2013 weiter an Relevanz gewonnen: 87 Prozent der Unternehmen bewerten das Thema als sehr wichtig oder wichtig für ihren Betrieb. Die Anzahl der Unternehmen, die in den vergangenen 24 Monaten nach eigenen Angaben konkrete Energieeffizienzmaßnahmen ergriffen hat, stieg sogar deutlich um zehn Prozentpunkte auf 68 Prozent an. Diese positive Entwicklung setzt sich voraussichtlich auch 2014 fort, denn aktuell geben zwei von drei Unternehmen an, in den nächsten zwei Jahren in konkrete Energieeffizienzmaßnahmen investieren zu wollen. Das ergab eine Umfrage unter 251 Unternehmen des produzierenden Gewerbes im Auftrag der Deutschen Energie-Agentur (dena) im Rahmen der bundesweiten Initiative EnergieEffizienz. (more…)
