The Shrinking Aral Sea

The Aral Sea is actually not a sea at all. It is an immense lake, a body of fresh water, although that particular description of its contents might now be more a figure of speech than practical fact.

Once it was world’s ‘fourth’ largest lake. But now the lake has shrunk by 70 percent.

Sandstorms and desertification

Saturday, and again on Monday (22^nd March) Beijing and part of eastern China was hit by two successive severe sandstorms originating in northern China. And the fine dust travelled not only to Taiwan, but as far as to the western United States.

Extinction of Species, and loss of vital elements in nature

International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reported in July that 869 species are extinct now.

If we add 290 ‘Critically Endangered’ species, then the loss will amount to 1159.

Save the Irrawaddy dolphins

A study conducted by the Wildlife Conservative Society (WCS) found large numbers of Irrawaddy dolphins in the freshwater region of Sunderbans Mangrove forest in Bangladesh. The study approximates the number to about 6000.
