ANN ARBOR — On opposite sides of the globe over millions of years, the snakes of North America and Australia independently evolved similar body types that helped them move and capture prey more efficiently.
Snakes on both continents include stout-bodied, highly camouflaged ambush predators, such as rattlesnakes in North America and death adders in Australia. There are slender, fast-moving foragers on both continents, as well as small burrowing snakes. (more…)
WWF zählt Elefanten in Mosambik: Jedes zweite Tier tot / Hauptbedrohung Wilderei
Berlin – In den letzten drei Jahren sind im Quirimbas Nationalpark im Norden Mosambiks bis zu 900 Elefanten ums Leben gekommen, wie eine Wildtierzählung des WWF ergeben hat. Jeder zweite der aus der Luft gezählten Dickhäuter sei tot gewesen, berichten die Umweltschützer. Mit nun unter 1.000 Elefanten sei die Population im Nationalpark auf einem historischen Tiefstand angelangt. „Der Quirimbas Nationalpark steht beispielhaft für die Wilderei-Probleme in Ostafrika“, konstatiert Brit Reichelt-Zolho, Afrika-Referentin beim WWF Deutschland. „Armut, Korruption und die mangelnde Durchsetzung von Gesetzen untergraben den Naturschutz und mindern die Möglichkeiten für eine nachhaltige Entwicklung.“ (more…)
A class of drug currently being used to treat leukaemia has the unexpected side-effect of boosting immune responses against many different cancers, reports a new study led by scientists at UCL and the Babraham Institute, Cambridge.
The drugs, called p110δ inhibitors, have shown such remarkable efficacy against certain leukaemias in recent clinical trials that patients on the placebo were switched to the real drug. Until now, however, they have not been tested in other types of cancer. (more…)
Wissenschaftler des Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) beobachteten mit Hilfe des Stratosphärenobservatoriums SOFIA einen Planeten außerhalb unseres Sonnensystems. Die Untersuchung der Atmosphäre soll entscheiden, ob es sich bei dem Exoplaneten um eine Supererde oder einen Minineptun handelt. Mit Dr. Claudia Dreyer war erstmals eine wissenschaftliche Projektleiterin des DLR (Principal Investigator) an Bord des Forschungsflugzeugs.(more…)
For years, scientists have had an itch they couldn’t scratch. Even with the best microscopes and spectrometers, it’s been difficult to study and identify molecules at the so-called mesoscale, a region of matter that ranges from 10 to 1000 nanometers in size. Now, with the help of broadband infrared light from the Advanced Light Source (ALS) synchrotron at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), researchers have developed a broadband imaging technique that looks inside this realm with unprecedented sensitivity and range.
By combining atomic force microscopy with infrared synchrotron light, researchers from Berkeley Lab and the University of Colorado have improved the spatial resolution of infrared spectroscopy by orders of magnitude, while simultaneously covering its full spectroscopic range, enabling the investigation of variety of nanoscale, mesoscale, and surface phenomena that were previously difficult to study. Der Kasseler Sportwissenschaftler Prof. Dr. Armin Kibele, der sich seit Jahren mit Strafstößen beschäftigt, hat dazu ein elektronisches Trainingsgerät für das Bewegungslernen entwickelt. Sein Trainingsprogramm baut auf Erfahrungen von Bundesliga-Spielern auf – und nutzt dabei ein Dilemma aller Torhüter.
Nationalspieler Thomas Müller verwandelte gegen Portugal sicher, doch ein verschossener Elfmeter kann eine ganze Fußballnation ins Unglück stürzen – das zeigt sich spätestens dann wieder, wenn bei der Fußball-Weltmeisterschaft in Brasilien K.o.-Spiele oder gar das Finale durch Elfmeterschießen entschieden werden. Dabei ist das sichere Verwandeln vom Punkt mit einer simplen Taktik erlernbar, hat der Kasseler Sportwissenschaftler Prof. Dr. Armin Kibele festgestellt.
