COLUMBIA, Mo. – Cancer, while always dangerous, truly becomes life-threatening when cancer cells begin to spread to different areas throughout the body. Now, researchers at the University of Missouri have discovered that a molecule used as a communication system by bacteria can be manipulated to prevent cancer cells from spreading. Senthil Kumar, an assistant research professor and assistant director of the Comparative Oncology and Epigenetics Laboratory at the MU College of Veterinary Medicine, says this communication system can be used to “tell” cancer cells how to act, or even to die on command. Neue ALMA-Beobachtungen erklären warum milchstaßenähnliche Galaxien im Universum so häufig vorkommen
Jahrzehntelang glaubten Wissenschaftler, dass die Verschmelzung von Galaxien normalerweise zur Entstehung von elliptischen Galaxien führt. Nun haben Forscher zum ersten Mal mit Hilfe von ALMA und einer Reihe weiterer Radioteleskope einen direkten Beweis dafür gefunden, dass kollidierende Galaxien stattdessen Scheibengalaxien hervorbringen können, und dass dieser Ausgang in der Tat recht häufig ist. Dieses überraschenden Ergebnis könnte erklären, warum es im Universum so viele Spiralgalaxien wie die Milchstraße gibt. (more…)

A graduate student in the University of Arizona’s Department of Soil, Water and Environmental Science, part of the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Obergh works with the samples under a sterile hood sporting an ultraviolet light to kill any unwanted DNA. Research from the University of Exeter has revealed that the rock goby (Gobius paganellus), an unassuming little fish commonly found in rock pools around Britain, southern Europe, and North Africa, is a master of camouflage and can rapidly change colour to conceal itself against its background.
Whether hiding from predators or from families hunting in rock pools, the rock goby can change both its colour and brightness to match its background in just one minute. (more…)
