Eu:CROPIS: Tomatenzucht im Weltall

Eine Überlebensgemeinschaft aus Bakterien, Tomaten und einzelligen Algen, künstlicher Urin und ein Satellit, der mit seiner Rotation um seine Achse die Schwerkraft von Mond und Mars simulieren kann – das sind die Bestandteile der Mission Eu:CROPIS (Euglena and Combined Regenerative Organic-Food Production in Space) des Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR). 2016 sollen zwei Gewächshäuser ins Weltall starten, in denen ein kombiniertes Lebenserhaltungssystem das Abfallprodukt Urin zu Dünger verwertet und so das Wachstum von Tomaten für Mond- und Marshabitate sowie Langzeitmissionen ermöglicht. Die Mission wird über ein Jahr laufen, anschließend verglüht der Satellit in der Atmosphäre. (more…)

NASA Releases Radar Movie of Asteroid 2012 DA14

An initial sequence of radar images of asteroid 2012 DA14 was obtained on the night of Feb. 15/16, 2013, by NASA scientists using the 230-foot (70-meter) Deep Space Network antenna at Goldstone, Calif. Each of the 72 frames required 320 seconds of data collection by the Goldstone radar.

The observations were made as the asteroid was moving away from Earth. The asteroid’s distance from the radar dish increased from 74,000 miles (120,000 kilometers) to 195,000 miles (314,000 kilometers). The resolution is 13 feet (four meters) per pixel. The images span close to eight hours and clearly show an elongated object undergoing roughly one full rotation. The images suggest that the asteroid has a long axis of about 130 feet (40 meters). The radar observations were led by scientists Lance Benner and Marina Brozovic of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. Additional Goldstone radar observations are scheduled on February 18, 19 and 20. (more…)

Berkeley Lab Researchers Discover a Rotational Motion of Cells that Plays a Critical Role in Their Normal Development

In a study that holds major implications for breast cancer research as well as basic cell biology, scientists with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have discovered a rotational motion that plays a critical role in the ability of breast cells to form the spherical structures in the mammary gland known as acini. This rotation, which the researchers call “CAMo,” for coherent angular motion, is necessary for the cells to form spheres. Without CAMo, the cells do not form spheres, which can lead to random motion, loss of structure and malignancy.

”What is most exciting to me about this stunning discovery is that it may finally give us a handle by which to discover the physical laws of cellular motion as they apply to biology,” says Mina Bissell, a leading authority on breast cancer and Distinguished Scientist with Berkeley Lab’s Life Sciences Division. Hubble to Target ‘Hot Jupiters’

An international team of astronomers led by a former UA graduate student has set out on the largest program to date exploring the alien atmospheres of “Hot Jupiters” – massive planets in solar systems far away from our own.

An international team of scientists has secured a large program of nearly 200 hours of observing time with NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope to explore the atmospheric conditions of planets outside our solar system, known as exoplanets. (more…)
