New platform offers IPv6 connectivity for any single sensor
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., ZARAGOZA and ZURICH – 21 Oct 2013: IBM and Libelium, a wireless sensor network hardware provider, today released an Internet of Things Starter Kit to enable dozens of sensor applications ranging from monitoring parking spaces or air pollution to providing assistance for the elderly.
Created by IBM scientists and Libelium engineers to ease application development, testing, and scalability of wireless sensor networks (WSN), the new Internet of Things Starter Kit integrates Libelium’s Waspmote wireless sensor platform with IBM’s Mote Runner software and 6LoWPAN, which allows every single sensor and device to connect directly to the Internet using the new IPv6 protocol. NEW ORLEANS, LA – 17 Sep 2013: At LinuxCon 2013 today, IBM announced plans to invest $1 billion (USD) in new Linux and open source technologies for IBM’s Power Systems servers. The investment aims to help clients capitalize on big data and cloud computing with modern systems built to handle the new wave of applications coming to the data center in the post-PC era.

ARMONK, N.Y – 30 Aug 2013: IBM today announced it has completed the acquisition of CSL International, a leading provider of virtualization management technology for IBM’s zEnterprise System. CSL International was a privately held company headquartered in Herzliya Pituach, Israel. Financial terms were not disclosed.
The acquisition deepens the consolidation and cloud capabilities of IBM zEnterprise technology by offering simplified set up and management of the virtualization environment. CSL International’s CSL-Wave software enables clients to monitor and manage their z/VM and Linux on System z environments using a powerful drag and drop interface. From Washington D.C. to the Philippines, IBM Creates Big Data and Analytics Curriculum for Universities Across the Globe; Announces Winners of 2013 Big Data and Analytics Faculty Awards
ARMONK, N.Y. – 14 Aug 2013: IBM today announced that it has added nine new academic collaborations to its more than 1,000 partnerships with universities across the globe, focusing on Big Data and analytics — all of which are designed to prepare studentsfor the 4.4 million jobs that will be created worldwide to support Big Data by 2015. The company also announced more than $100,000 in awards for Big Data curricula.
As part of IBM’s Academic Initiative, the company is launching new curricula focusing on Big Data and analytics with Georgetown University, George Washington University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and the University of Missouri, as well as a new addition to IBM’s partnership with Northwestern University. CAMBRIDGE, MA – 24 Jun 2013: The search for more versatile and less expensive materials for solar energy received a boost today as Harvard launched a free database that catalogues the suitability of 2.3 million organic, carbon compounds for converting sunlight into electricity.
Harvard’s Clean Energy project — which screened the molecules using World Community Grid, an IBM-managed virtual supercomputer that harnesses the surplus computer power donated by volunteers — is believed to be the most extensive investigation of quantum chemicals ever performed. (more…)
Mobile Percentage of Sales Reaches 17 percent, as On-the-Go Consumers Shop for Mom
ARMONK, N.Y. – 16 May 2013: Mother’s Day online shopping grew 15 percent in the week leading up to Mother’s Day, compared to the same time period last year. Spurred by mobile commerce, mobile percentage of sales reached 17 percent, according to IBM’s Digital Analytics Benchmark, a cloud-based analysis of the online retail market.
With the National Retail Federation (NRF) estimating Mother’s Day sales reached $20 billion this year, retailers made it easier for consumers to buy for mom through their smartphones and tablets. (more…)
