Digital Archaeology Project to Use Big Data

The interdisciplinary project, led by the UA’s Barbara Mills and Sudha Ram, was awarded a $1.7 million grant from the National Science Foundation.

When we think about some of the most pressing questions facing society today — on topics ranging from immigration to inequality to overpopulation — it might be helpful to consider how humans have handled similar issues throughout history, suggest researchers at the University of Arizona. (more…)

Quantum Computation to Tackle Fundamental Science Problems

Berkeley Lab receives $3 million per year to explore quantum computing for science

For more than 50 years, Moore’s Law has reigned supreme. The observation that the number of transistors on a computer chip doubles roughly every two years has set the pace for our modern digital revolution—making smartphones, personal computers and current supercomputers possible. But Moore’s Law is slowing. And even if it wasn’t, some of the big problems that scientists need to tackle might be beyond the reach of conventional computers. (more…)

Finding Neutrinos – a Q&A with Matthew Green

Matthew Green is an assistant professor of physics at NC State. He was involved in a multi-institutional research project aimed at detecting a process called Coherent Elastic Neutrino Nuclear Scattering (CEvNS). The project was successful, and its findings appear in Science. Matthew agreed to a Q&A with The Abstract on the project and its results. (more…)

(more…)

Scientists create first laboratory generation of high-energy shock waves that accelerate astrophysical particles

Throughout the universe, supersonic shock waves propel cosmic rays and supernova particles to velocities near the speed of light. The most high-energy of these astrophysical shocks occur too far outside the solar system to be studied in detail and have long puzzled astrophysicists. Shocks closer to Earth can be detected by spacecraft, but they fly by too quickly to probe a wave’s formation. (more…)
