The stark contrast between America’s “me-first” culture and the “collective-good” mentality in China is reflected in the two countries’ use of social networking sites, according to a new study led by a Michigan State University scholar.

U.S. citizens spend more time on the networking sites, consider them to be more important and have more “friends” on the sites, the research found. The most popular social networking site in the United States is Facebook; in China, two of the most popular sites are RenRen and Qzone. (more…)

Parents’ Behavior Linked to Kids’ Videogame Playing

EAST LANSING, Mich. — Children who think their parents are poor monitors or nag a lot tend to play videogames more than other kids, according to a study by Michigan State University researchers.

The study, funded by the National Science Foundation, is one of the first to link parental behavior to kids’ videogame playing. The researchers surveyed more than 500 students from 20 middle schools and found that the more children perceived their parents’ behavior as negative (e.g., “nags a lot”) and the less monitoring parents did, the more the children played videogames.
