There are hundreds of ‘Zeitarbeitsfirma’ or ‘temporary employment agency’ dominating the current German labour market. These agencies lease workers mostly on short-term basis to different industries, supermarkets and other business enterprises. Leased workers (In German: Lieharbeiter or Zeitarbeiter) are normally low-paid and forced to do the heaviest works at their work places. Often they have to accept or bow down to inhuman demands of the ‘Zeitarbeitsfirma’.

Created on recommendation of the 2006 Report of the Brown University Steering Committee on Slavery and Justice, the new Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice will expand upon the work of that committee, creating a space for student and faculty research and public discussion of the history and legacies of these issues. Here, inaugural director B. Anthony Bogues shares his vision for the Center.
PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — In 2003, a University steering committee undertook a three-year project on slavery and justice. One of the committee’s recommendations was the creation of a center that would continue to expand upon that work. Earlier this year, Anthony Bogues was named director of the new center. He is hiring staff and finding the center a permanent home on campus, which he expects to have within the next two years. For now, the Center will be located in Alumnae Hall.
Part of the center’s mission will be to act as a public forum for the discussion of the history of slavery and its legacy. On Wednesday, Oct. 3, the center and the Office of the Dean of the College will sponsor the 2012 First Readings Lecture, which will take place at 5 p.m. in the Salomon Center for Teaching. Bounty hunting, or the practice of apprehending fugitives for a monetary reward, is often something that conjures up images of men or women who operates outside of the law and bring criminals to justice through legally ambiguous means. In reality however, bounty hunting, also known as skip tracing, is a necessary part of the modern criminal justice system in the United States. This article will serve as a basic explanation of how bounty hunters operate, their purpose in society and their basic day-to-day operations in bringing those who fail to appear in court to justice through legal means.
As a profession bounty hunting is something that is often romanticized by movies and other media. However, the job is actually a fairly technical and adheres to the same stringent due process laws that cops and courts are subject to. Bounty hunting is also a profession that depends on a thorough knowledge of laws and legal precedent, something that often requires a college-level education that many overlook. (more…)
