Patient 1 had two years of progressive memory loss. She was considering quitting her job, which involved analyzing data and writing reports, she got disoriented driving, and she mixed up the names of her pets.

WWF und Germanwatch präsentieren Vorschläge zur Erreichung des Klimaschutzziels 2020

Das deutsche Klimaschutzziel – 40 Prozent weniger Treibhausgase bis 2020 – ist im Koalitionsvertrag bestätigt worden. Die Maßnahmen, mit denen dieses in den verbleibenden sechs Jahren erreicht werden soll, müssen jetzt im Aktionsprogramm Klimaschutz der Bundesregierung beschlossen werden. Germanwatch und WWF zeigen in einer Kurzstudie auf, dass das Klimaschutzziel ohne eine deutliche Reduzierung der Kohleverstromung nicht zu erreichen ist. Die Autoren rechnen vor, dass gegenüber 2013 wenigstens 100 Millionen Tonnen CO2 bis zum Jahr 2020 in der Stromerzeugung eingespart werden müssen, damit Deutschland auf einem mit dem 2-Grad-Limit zu vereinbarenden Pfad bleibt. A new concept in metallic alloy design – called “high‐entropy alloys” – has yielded a multiple-element material that not only tests out as one of the toughest on record, but, unlike most materials, the toughness as well as the strength and ductility of this alloy actually improves at cryogenic temperatures. This multi-element alloy was synthesized and tested through a collaboration of researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Lawrence Berkeley and Oak Ridge National Laboratories (Berkeley Lab and ORNL). Besonders Reaktionen, die sich nicht durch Licht auslösen lassen, sind auf kurzen Zeitskalen schwierig zu verfolgen. Ein Team von Forschern um Alec Wodtke am Max-Planck-Institut (MPI) für biophysikalische Chemie und an der Universität Göttingen hat jetzt ultrakurze Pulse von Atomen erzeugt. Die sogenannte bunch-compression-photolysis-Methode könnte helfen, zeitlich hochaufgelöste Experimente durchzuführen, bei denen atomare Kollisionen den Anfang bilden. (Nature Communications, 5. Why ‘I’m so happy I could cry’ makes sense

The phrase “tears of joy” never made much sense to Yale psychologist Oriana Aragon. But after conducting a series of studies of such seemingly incongruous expressions, she now understands better why people cry when they are happy.

“People may be restoring emotional equilibrium with these expressions,” said Aragon, lead author of work to be published in the journal Psychological Science. “They seem to take place when people are overwhelmed with strong positive emotions, and people who do this seem to recover better from those strong emotions.” (more…)

Untersuchungen an Stalagmiten aus einer Höhle im Grenzgebiet zwischen Deutschland und Österreich liefern neue, präzise Daten über das Klima in Mitteleuropa für den Zeitraum vor 30.000 bis 60.000 Jahren. Ein Team um Dr. Gina Moseley vom Institut für Geologie konnte erstmals zeigen, dass sich klimatische Veränderungen mit ähnlich hoher Geschwindigkeit wie in Grönland vollzogen. (more…)
