Archaeon kann Metalle aus synthetischem Mars-Regolith oxidieren und verstoffwechseln
WissenschafterInnen um Tetyana Milojevic von der Fakultät für Chemie der Universität Wien sind auf der Suche nach einzigartigen “Biosignaturen”, die Mikroben überall hinterlassen – auch auf synthetisch hergestellten extraterrestrischen Mineralien. Diese erforscht die Biochemikerin und Astrobiologin in einer eigenen “Mars-Farm”, wo sie die Interaktion zwischen dem Archaeon Metallosphaera sedula und Gesteinsformen, wie sie am Mars vorkommen, beobachtet. Die Mikroben sind in der Lage, die Metalle zu oxidieren und in ihren Stoffwechsel aufzunehmen. Die Ergebnisse wurden kürzlich im Fachjournal “Frontiers in Microbiology” publiziert.
