What could a guineafowl strolling through a bed of poppy seeds have to do with a dinosaur footprint made 200 million years ago?
PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — Stephen Gatesy, professor of ecology and evolutionary biology at Brown, and his former postdoctoral fellow Peter Falkingham, now at the Royal Veterinary College in the United Kingdom, used measurements from X-ray videos of the 3-D foot movement of a chicken-like bird as an input for a computer simulation of a substrate of poppy seeds. In this way, they could visualize the displacement of seeds through time and study the “birth” of tracks at different depths. The researchers then used the model to clarify previously unexplained features of a Jurassic dinosaur track. (more…)
Team mit Freiburger Forschern hat neuen Ansatz für Therapie gegen B-Zell-akute lymphoblastische Leukämie entdeckt
Die B-Zell-akute lymphoblastische Leukämie (B-ALL) ist die häufigste Tumorerkrankung im Kindesalter und tritt auch bei Erwachsenen auf. Sie entsteht, wenn die Signalleitung in unreifen B-Zellen, auch prä-B-Zellen genannt, gestört ist. Das Team um Prof. Dr. Markus Müschen von der University of California in San Francisco/USA hat mit Unterstützung von Prof. Dr. Hassan Jumaa und Prof. Dr. Michael Reth vom Exzellenzcluster BIOSS Centre for Biological Signalling Studies der Universität Freiburg einen neuen Ansatz für die Therapie der B-ALL-Tumorerkrankung gefunden. Ihre Untersuchungen könnten ein Umdenken in den klinischen Ansätzen für die Therapie der Tumorerkrankung bewirken. Die Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler haben ihre Ergebnisse in der Fachzeitschrift „Nature“ veröffentlicht. (more…)

Wissenschaftler des Senckenberg Forschungsinstitutes in Frankfurt und des Senckenberg Center for Human Evolution and Palaeoenvironment (HEP) in Tübingen haben die Verwandtschaftsverhältnisse der Laotischen Felsenratte untersucht, einem sogenannten „lebenden Fossil“. Durch Methoden der vergleichenden Anatomie kommen sie zu dem Schluss, dass die kleinen Nager nah mit den heute in Nordafrika lebenden Gundis verwandt sind. Tiefsee-Mikroben verarbeiten gelöste organische Stoffe nur ineffizient, weil die Moleküle zu stark verdünnt vorliegen
Die Tiefsee als gigantischer Kohlenstoffspeicher spielt eine entscheidende Rolle beim Klimawandel. Experimente zur Verfügbarkeit von gelöstem organischem Material im Tiefenwasser des Atlantiks haben jetzt gezeigt, dass Tiefwassermikroben durchaus in der Lage sind, dieses organische Material zu nutzen – allerdings aufgrund der großen Verdünnung nicht effizient. Ein internationales ForscherInnenteam unter Leitung von Gerhard J. Herndl von der Universität Wien publiziert dazu in der aktuellen Ausgabe der Fachzeitschrift “Science”. (more…)
