Mars: Der Planet, der einen ganzen Ozean voll Wasser verlor

Eine heute veröffentlichte Studie hat ergeben, dass einst ein großer Ur-Ozean die Marsoberfläche bedeckte. Er beinhaltete mehr Wasser als das Nordpolarmeer und bedeckte einen größeren Anteil der Planetenoberfläche als der Atlantik auf der Erde. Diese Erkenntnis gewann ein internationales Team aus Wissenschaftlern, das mit dem Very Large Telescope zusammen mit Instrumenten am W. M. Keck-Observatorium und der Infrared Telescope Facility der NASA über einen Zeitraum von sechs Jahren die Planetenatmosphäre beobachtete. Copper on the Brain at Rest: Berkeley Lab Reports Proper Copper Levels Essential to Spontaneous Neural Activity

In recent years it has been established that copper plays an essential role in the health of the human brain. Improper copper oxidation has been linked to several neurological disorders including Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Menkes’ and Wilson’s. Copper has also been identified as a critical ingredient in the enzymes that activate the brain’s neurotransmitters in response to stimuli. Now a new study by researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) has shown that proper copper levels are also essential to the health of the brain at rest. SONNE Expedition SO239: Europäische Forscher ergründen die möglichen Auswirkungen des Tiefseebergbaus

Die Untersuchung der biologischen und geologischen Konsequenzen des Meeresbodenbergbaus ist das Ziel einer Forschungsreise auf dem neuen deutschen Forschungsschiff Sonne, das heute in See sticht. Von Panama aus geht es in die pazifische Manganknollenregion. Dort werden unter der Leitung des Forschungsinstituts Senckenberg am Meer Wissenschaftlerinnen und Wissenschaftler aus 11 europäischen Nationen Proben aus etwa 5000 Meter Tiefe sammeln, um Einblicke in die Faunengemeinschaften von Manganknollenfeldern zu erhalten und deren Widerstandsfähigkeit gegenüber einem Abbau besser abschätzen zu können. Am 30. April wird die Sonne in Manzanillo (Mexiko) wieder einlaufen. (more…)

Das Institut für Mineralogie und Petrographie verfügt über eine historische Sammlung von Kristallmodellen, die bereits Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts von Adolf Pichler angelegt wurde. Mittlerweile zu wertvoll, um weiterhin im Unterricht eingesetzt werden zu können, wurde nach Ersatz gesucht. Schüler der HTL Fulpmes im Stubaital waren zur Stelle. (more…)
