Ausgestorbene Riesenschildkröte – 1000 Jahre alte DNA entschlüsselt

Wissenschaftler von Senckenberg und der Universität Potsdam haben das Erbgut der ausgestorbenen Riesenschildkröte Chelonoidis alburyorum untersucht. Dem internationalen Team gelang es erstmalig eine vollständige DNA-Sequenz der tropischen Tiere zu gewinnen. Das Erbgut offenbart, dass die Bahamas-Schildkröten nahe Verwandte der Galapagos-Schildkröten und der südamerikanischen Chaco-Schildkröten waren. In ihrer heute im Fachjournal der Royal Society of London „Proceedings B“ erschienenen Studie zeigen sie zudem, dass die Tiere vom Menschen ausgerottet wurden. (more…)
