WWF: Klimawandel setzt heimischen Arten mit warmen Wintern und trockenen Sommern zu

Der Klimawandel gibt vielen ohnehin bedrohten Arten den Rest – dies ist ein zentrales Fazit des in Yokohama vorgestellten fünften Klimabericht des IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change). Meist sind es nicht einzelne Ursachen, die zum Aussterben von Tieren und Pflanzen führen, sondern das tödliche Zusammenspiel mehrerer Faktoren. „Der Klimawandel hat einen Katalysator-Effekt. Bei schlechten Ausgangsbedingungen droht er für immer mehr bedrohte Arten zum Sargnagel werden“, warnt Eberhard Brandes, Vorstand des WWF Deutschland. Warm Ocean Causing Most Antarctic Ice Shelf Mass Loss

PASADENA, Calif. — Ocean waters melting the undersides of Antarctic ice shelves are responsible for most of the continent’s ice shelf mass loss, a new study by NASA and university researchers has found.

Scientists have studied the rates of basal melt, or the melting of the ice shelves from underneath, of individual ice shelves, the floating extensions of glaciers that empty into the sea. But this is the first comprehensive survey of all Antarctic ice shelves. The study found basal melt accounted for 55 percent of all Antarctic ice shelf mass loss from 2003 to 2008, an amount much higher than previously thought. (more…)

Scientists Uncover Vast Differences in Earth’s Polar Ocean Microbial Communities

ANN ARBOR— An international team of scientists, including a University of Michigan graduate student, has demonstrated that a clear difference exists between the marine microbial communities in the Southern and Arctic oceans, contributing to a better understanding of the biodiversity of marine life at the poles.

The most comprehensive comparison of microbial diversity at both of Earth’s polar oceans showed that about 75 percent of the organisms at each pole are different. This insight sheds light on newly recognized biodiversity patterns and reinforces the importance of studying Earth’s polar regions in the face of a changing climate. And it highlights the need for further research on the impacts of sea ice, seasonal shifts and freshwater input in both regions. (more…)
