Das Wissenschaftsmagazin Science berichtet in seiner aktuellen Ausgabe über eine neuartige Wärmekraftmaschine, die mit nur einem einzelnen Atom funktioniert. Es handelt sich um Experimente, die unter Leitung von Univ.-Prof. Dr. Kilian Singer, Leiter des Fachgebiets Experimentalphysik I an der Universität Kassel, noch in seiner Zeit an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz (JGU) aufgebaut und in Zusammenarbeit mit theoretischen Physikern der Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg durchgeführt wurden.
