The protein, called Arc, has properties similar to those that viruses use for infecting host cells, and originated from a chance evolutionary event that occurred hundreds of millions of years ago. Astrophysiker der Universität Tübingen sind an einem neuen Projekt der europäischen Raumfahrtagentur ESA beteiligt: Als eines von drei Konzepten wurde die Mission „THESEUS“, bei der das Institut für Astronomie und Astrophysik (IAAT) eine wichtige Rolle spielt, in das Wissenschaftsprogramm aufgenommen. Neue Exoplanetenmission ARIEL mit Beteiligung der Universität Wien
Die Europäische Weltraumagentur ESA hat das Weltraumobservatorium ARIEL als neue Exoplanetenmission mit geplantem Start im Jahr 2028 ausgewählt. Das Institut für Astrophysik der Universität Wien ist maßgeblich an der Mission beteiligt. ARIELs Ziel ist es, fundamentale Fragen zur Entstehung und Evolution von extrasolaren Planetensystemen zu beantworten. Während ihrer vierjährigen Mission wird ARIEL 1.000 Planeten in der Umlaufbahn um andere Sterne beobachten und die chemische Zusammensetzung von Planetenatmosphären untersuchen.

Scientists and engineers are fascinated by self-folding structures. Imagine the possibilities: Heart stents that unfold in the right location or pop-up tents that assemble at the press of a button, as well as nanoscale versions for tiny machines. Someone I know was in a minor car crash recently. The car was hit from behind by a driver who was using a cellphone, causing damage to both vehicles, but nobody was hurt. The police were called, and though the officer was told that the driver who caused the crash was using a cellphone, no tickets were issued. The officer left without filing any kind of accident report. (more…)
