3400 Jahre alte Stadt aus dem Tigris aufgetaucht
Dürre ermöglicht Ausgrabung eines ehemaligen Zentrums im Reich von Mittani
Ein Team aus deutschen und kurdischen Archäologinnen und Archäologen hat am Tigris eine 3400 Jahre alte Stadt aus der Zeit des Mittani-Reichs freigelegt, die aus dem Wasser des Mosul-Stausees aufgetaucht war. Ermöglicht wurde dies, weil der Wasserspiegel des Sees aufgrund extremer Trockenheit im Irak rapide abgesunken war. Bei der ausgedehnten Stadtanlage mit Palast und mehreren Großbauten könnte es sich um das alte Zachiku handeln. Dieses dürfte ein wichtiges Zentrum im Großreich von Mittani gewesen sein (ca. 1550–1350 v. Chr.). (more…)

Sprachmelodie hilft beim Erkennen von Wörtern
Hören wir eine uns fremde Sprache, ist es schwierig zu erkennen, wann ein Wort aufhört und das nächste beginnt. Dabei kann die Sprachmelodie eine Hilfe sein: Wissenschafter*innen der Universität Wien haben herausgefunden, dass Wörter in einem kontinuierlichen Sprachfluss gut erkannt werden, wenn die Silbe am Wortende länger ausgesprochen wird als die restlichen Silben des Wortes. Eine ungewohnte Sprachmelodie erschwert hingegen das Erkennen von Wörtern. Die Studie erscheint in Frontiers in Psychology. (more…)
