Managing the Deluge of ‘Big Data’ From Space

For NASA and its dozens of missions, data pour in every day like rushing rivers. Spacecraft monitor everything from our home planet to faraway galaxies, beaming back images and information to Earth. All those digital records need to be stored, indexed and processed so that spacecraft engineers, scientists and people across the globe can use the data to understand Earth and the universe beyond.

At NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., mission planners and software engineers are coming up with new strategies for managing the ever-increasing flow of such large and complex data streams, referred to in the information technology community as “big data.” (more…)

To this day, progress in the battle against cancer depends on understanding the underlying causes and molecular mechanisms of the disease.

WWF fordert faire Ursachenanalyse

Nach der offiziellen Bekanntgabe der neuen EEG-Umlage für das kommende Jahr von 6,24 Cent je Kilowattstunde fordert der WWF eine faire Debatte über die Ursachen. Die Erhöhung der Umlage sei maßgeblich dem stark gesunkenen Börsenstrompreis geschuldet. Die niedrigen Börsenstrompreise, die auch durch erneuerbare Energien möglich geworden sind, würden jedoch nicht an den Normalverbraucher weitergegeben. Darüber hinaus trügen die ausufernden Rabatte für eine stetig steigende Anzahl von Industriekunden zum Ansteigen der Umlage für die nicht privilegierten Verbraucher bei. Der Ausbau weiterer EEG förderbarer Anlagen habe nur geringfügig die derzeitigen Kosten steigen lassen. „Das EEG wird immer weiter vollgepackt mit Industrierabatten, während Mittelstand und Normalbürger für die Energiewende zahlen. Dies ist nicht tragbar und muss schnell verändert werden“, sagt Eberhard Brandes, Vorstand des WWF Deutschland. (more…)

Nobel in Physics: A long time in the making

Nearly 50 years of experiments and billions of dollars in equipment followed the prediction of the Higgs mechanism by theoretical physicists in 1964. Ulrich Heintz and Meenakshi Narain, two of the particle physicists at Brown University who worked on experiments at Fermilab and at CERN, note that the successful search for the Higgs was caried on by thousands of researchers.

The Nobel Prize awarded today to Francois Englert and Peter Higgs was a long time in the making. The Higgs mechanism was invented almost 50 years ago, and ever since the standard model emerged as the explanation of everything in particle physics that we have observed so far. (more…)

Bürger aus Fukushima-Region wegen mangelhafter Dekontaminierung in schrecklicher Zwickmühle

Seit dem 14. Oktober ist ein 16-köpfiges Spezialistenteam der Internationalen Atomenergiebehörde IAEA in Japan, um sich ein Bild von den Dekontaminierungsmaßnahmen vor Ort in der Provinz Fukushima zu machen. Die japanische Regierung arbeitet derzeit mit Hochdruck daran, Gebiete zu reinigen: in schwarzen Säcken verpackt liegen aufgelesene Blätter, abgetragenes Erdreich und radioaktiv belastete Gegenstände überall am Straßenrand – eine Entsorgungsmöglichkeit gibt es bisher nicht.

Nun versucht die Regierung einen Normalzustand vorzugaukeln und die geflohenen Menschen zur Rückkehr in die Evakuierungsgebiete wie den Ort Tamura zu bewegen. Ein Greenpeace-Expertenteam war zwei Wochen zuvor in der Region unterwegs um die Strahlung zu messen und menschliche Schicksale vor Ort zu dokumentieren. (more…)

Study: Nearly 500,000 perished in Iraq war

Researchers from four universities, including the University of Washington, estimate that nearly a half-million people died from causes attributable to the war in Iraq from 2003 through 2011.

The results, from the first population-based survey since 2006 to estimate war-related deaths in Iraq and the first covering the conflict’s full timespan, are published Oct. 15 in the open-access journal PLOS Medicine. (more…)
