WWF setzt 10.000 Euro Belohnung aus. / Deutschland hat Nachholbedarf bei Wilderei-Bekämpfung

Schon wieder wurde ein geschütztes und bedrohtes Wildtier in Deutschland illegal abgeschossen. Diesmal hat es einen Wolfswelpen in der sächsischen Lausitz erwischt. Am vergangenen Freitag wurde das Tier im Landkreis Bautzen auf einer Wiese tot aufgefunden. Für sachdienliche Hinweise, die zur Ergreifung des Täters führen, hat der WWF eine Belohnung von insgesamt 10.000 Euro ausgesetzt.

Wölfe sind nach EU-Recht und Bundesnaturschutzgesetz eine streng geschützte Art. Ihre unerlaubte Tötung stellt eine Straftat dar. Deutschland habe, so die WWF-Kritik, bei der Verfolgung von Naturschutzkriminalität großen Nachholbedarf. (more…)

Post-Sandy Survey Shows a Polluted but Generally Intact Barrier System off Long Island

AUSTIN, Texas — As coastal communities continue to rebuild in the wake of Hurricane Sandy, scientists at last week’s annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union offer some encouraging news: The storm did not seriously damage the offshore barrier system that controls erosion on Long Island. Long-term concerns remain about the effects on the region of sea-level rise, pollutants churned up by the storm within back-barrier estuaries, and the damage closer to shore, but in the near-term, Long Island residents can rebuild knowing that Hurricane Sandy did not significantly alter the offshore barrier systems that control coastal erosion on the island. Jedes dritte Kind besitzt keine Geburtsurkunde

Kindern drohen grosse Nachteile, wenn sie ihre Geburt und damit ihr Alter nicht nachweisen können. Die Unicef schlägt Alarm.

Im östlichen und südlichen Afrikas sowie im südlichen Asien hat sogar die Mehrheit der Kinder keinen Geburtsschein. Sie sind amtlich nicht registriert. Auf die vielen Nachteile, welche den Kindern daraus entstehen, macht ein kürzlicher Bericht der UN-Kinderhilfsorganisation Unicef aufmerksam.

Die Geburtsurkunde ist ein verbrieftes Recht jeden Kindes, das im Übereinkommen über die Rechte des Kindes, kurz UN-Kinderrechtskonvention (englisch Convention on the Rights of the Child, CRC), ist seit 1990 festgeschrieben ist. Nur die USA und Somalia habe die Konvention nicht unterzeichnet. In Artikel 7 ist das Recht des Kindes auf en Geburtsregister wie folgt definiert: (more…)

Battery could find use in mobile applications, and eventually, electric vehicles with 300-mile range

Researchers at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) have demonstrated in the laboratory a lithium-sulfur (Li/S) battery that has more than twice the specific energy of lithium-ion batteries, and that lasts for more than 1,500 cycles of charge-discharge with minimal decay of the battery’s capacity. This is the longest cycle life reported so far for any lithium-sulfur battery.

Demand for high-performance batteries for electric and hybrid electric vehicles capable of matching the range and power of the combustion engine encourages scientists to develop new battery chemistries that could deliver more power and energy than lithium-ion batteries, currently the best performing battery chemistry in the marketplace.
