Lavaströme am Fuß des Mistretta-Kraters auf dem Mars

Diese Bilder der vom Deutschen Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) betriebenen hochauflösenden Stereokamera HRSC auf der europäischen Mars Express-Sonde lassen erkennen, wie stark der Vulkanismus die Oberfläche des Mars geprägt hat. Der Krater Mistretta und die ihn umgebende Hochlandebene Daedalia Planum wurden von Lavaströmen überflutet, die vom Vulkan Arsia Mons stammen. Er ist fast 18 Kilometer hoch und liegt 900 Kilometer im Nordwesten. (more…)

Die bekannte Volksweise aus dem 19. Jahrhundert weist auf die
Bedeutung des Märzes hin. So gibt es viele Bauernregeln, die sich auf
den März und der zu erwartenden Ernte beziehen.

“Lässt der März sich trocken an, bringt er Brot für jedermann”

So lautet eine Bauernregel für den März. Und wenn man es genau nimmt,
so war der März mit einem mittleren deutschlandweiten Niederschlag
von 1,7 mm bisher wirklich nicht sehr regenreich. Und auch in den
nächsten Tagen sind durch andauernden Hochdruckeinfluss keine
nennenswerten Niederschläge in Sicht. (more…)

NASA: Warm Rivers Play Role in Arctic Sea Ice Melt

The heat from warm river waters draining into the Arctic Ocean is contributing to the melting of Arctic sea ice each summer, a new NASA study finds.

A research team led by Son Nghiem of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., used satellite data to measure the surface temperature of the waters discharging from a Canadian river into the icy Beaufort Sea during the summer of 2012. They observed a sudden influx of warm river waters into the sea that rapidly warmed the surface layers of the ocean, enhancing the melting of sea ice. A paper describing the study is now published online in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. (more…)

UCLA researchers create Google Glass app for instant medical diagnostic test results

A team of researchers from UCLA’s Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science has developed a Google Glass application and a server platform that allow users of the wearable, glasses-like computer to perform instant, wireless diagnostic testing for a variety of diseases and health conditions.

With the new UCLA technology, Google Glass wearers can use the device’s hands-free camera to capture pictures of rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs), small strips on which blood or fluid samples are placed and which change color to indicate the presence of HIV, malaria, prostate cancer or other conditions. Without relying on any additional devices, users can upload these images to a UCLA-designed server platform and receive accurate analyses — far more detailed than with the human eye — in as little as eight seconds. In einem Zitat, das Bertolt Brecht zugeschrieben wird, hieß es einst: „Wo Unrecht zu Recht wird, wird Widerstand zur Pflicht“. Dieses Zitat sollte man in Bezug auf das heutige Internet in allen Variationen lesen. Etwa: Wo Recht zu Unrecht wird, wird Widerstand zur Pflicht. Oder: Wo Unrecht nicht zu Recht wird, das Unrecht beseitigt, also Unrecht fortbesteht… und so fort. Nur: Wie kann Widerstand aussehen? Hans Magnus Enzensberger empfiehlt uns diese Woche die totale Verweigerungshaltung – eine Art Ausstieg aus der digitalen Gesellschaft. Vielleicht wollen Sie auch weder Smartphone noch Tablet oder Rechner benutzen und in der Einöde der Passivität verharren? Nein? Der NABU und sein internationaler Partner BirdLife International sowie die European Vulture Conservation Foundation fordern ein sofortiges Einsatzverbot des Wirkstoffes Diclofenac bei Tieren in Europa. Diclofenac ist ein starkes schmerz- und entzündungshemmendes Mittel, das für das beinahe komplette Aussterben aller Geierarten Indiens, Pakistans und Nepals verantwortlich ist. Die Vögel sterben qualvoll an Nierenversagen, sobald sie von Tieren fressen, die vor ihrem Tod mit diesem Mittel behandelt wurden. (more…)

Study in Mice Raises Question: Could PTSD Involve Immune Cell Response to Stress?

After chronic stress, primed immune cells in spleen lead to excessive reaction to later event

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Chronic stress that produces inflammation and anxiety in mice appears to prime their immune systems for a prolonged fight, causing the animals to have an excessive reaction to a single acute stressor weeks later, new research suggests.

After the mice recovered from the effects of chronic stress, a single stressful event 24 days later quickly returned them to a chronically stressed state in biological and behavioral terms. Mice that had not experienced the chronic stress were unaffected by the single acute stressor. (more…)

New Technique Targets C Code to Spot, Contain Malware Attacks

Researchers from North Carolina State University have developed a new tool to detect and contain malware that attempts root exploits in Android devices. The tool improves on previous techniques by targeting code written in the C programming language – which is often used to create root exploit malware, whereas the bulk of Android applications are written in Java.

Root exploits take over the system administration functions of an operating system, such as Android. A successful Android root exploit effectively gives hackers unfettered control of a user’s smartphone. (more…)
