In steel making, two desirable qualities — strength and ductility — tend to be at odds: Stronger steel is less ductile, and more ductile steel is not as strong. Engineers at Brown University, three Chinese universities, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences have shown that when cylinders of steel are twisted, their strength is improved without sacrificing ductility. A new study from North Carolina State University and the University of Toronto finds that people pay more attention to the upper half of their field of vision – a finding which could have ramifications for everything from traffic signs to software interface design.
“Specifically, we tested people’s ability to quickly identify a target amidst visual clutter,” says Dr. Jing Feng, an assistant professor of psychology at NC State and lead author of a paper on the work. “Basically, we wanted to see where people concentrate their attention at first glance.” (more…)
Hamburg, 27. 04. 2014 – Greenpeace-Aktivisten haben den russischen Tanker, der das erste arktische Öl nach Europa transportiert, auf dem Nordostatlantik gesichtet. Die Aktivisten machten aus einem Flugzeug erste Foto- und Videoaufnahmen des Tankers.
Die „Mikhail Ulyanov“ befand sich auf Höhe des Polarkreises und fährt Richtung Rotterdam. Dort soll das Öl, das inzwischen vom französischen Konzern Total gekauft wurde, entladen werden. Die genaue Position des Tankers wird hier aktualisiert. Das Öl, das der Tanker transportiert, stammt von der umstrittenen Gazprom-Plattform in der arktischen Petschorasee. „Das Fördern von Öl im arktischen Ozean schafft ein unvertretbar hohes Risiko für die Umwelt und unser Klima. Es muss verboten werden – egal ob in Russland, den USA, Kanada oder einem anderen arktischen Anrainerland“, sagt Jürgen Knirsch, Sprecher von Greenpeace. (more…)
